Job description
The agricultural job includes the duties associated with sowing, growing, harvesting, and packaging tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, squash, and beans; the maintenance of the farm, the field and the packing, the sanitation, and the cleaning after the harvest, as well as the duties related to the deployment and the maintenance of the irrigation in the field and the protection against the frosts. Workers will prepare the ground by laying plastic in field rows before planting of crops. It also includes making decisions based on size, color, and maturity in accordance with prescribed standards. Workers must be careful when carrying out their work duties on the farm and be aware of not damaging fruits and vegetables. Workers must comply with all safety rules according to the instructions of their supervisors and all agricultural work operations must comply with the standards and specifications given by the employer. They will be responsible for the classification in the field and the discarding of bad quality, rotten and/or over-ripe products. Workers will gently load the good quality products into containers, taking care to avoid damage or bruises. Tomatoes: Workers are assigned a row or series of rows and are required to select and choose products according to criteria described and demonstrated by managers, such as size, color, and maturity. They will be responsible for the leveling and discarding of the table of poor-quality products, rotten or over mature. Workers can carry a full container that weighs approximately fifty (50) pounds and empty them in a field container or load them into a trailer. Cucumbers, Peppers, Squash: Workers will be assigned a row or series of rows and will be required to bend over and lean to select and pick products according to criteria described and demonstrated by managers, such as size, color, and maturity, and place them in field containers. Workers will be required to stack containers in trucks and unload. Beans: Workers will be assigned a row or series of rows and will be required to guide the vines & string onto the stakes. Packing House: Workers will be required to perform miscellaneous packing housework, including grading, clean-up, stacking packed cartons, dumping fruit from cartons, and constructing boxes. Packinghouse is owned by Del Valle Fresh, Inc., to which, only their products will be going in/out of packinghouse. Packinghouse is located off the farm, on the campus of Del Valle’s main office. Maintenance: The workers will be responsible for the general maintenance of the garden. They will remove debris from the ground like sticks, straw, etc. They will be responsible for the elimination of old and unproductive trees and plants. They should take care not to damage or destroy other trees and plants or properties in the area. Workers involved in garden maintenance may be asked to install irrigation pipes, repair, and maintain drip systems, hose, belts; distribute fertilizers, pick up roots and branches, sprouts or unwanted trees; dig root shoots, knock down trees, use a manual sprayer, remove vines and leash and tie fruit trees and plants. Sanitation of farm, field, and slope: workers may be responsible for collecting garbage, cleaning bathrooms, sweeping, and mopping floors, and cleaning equipment from the packing line. May transport workers to grocery store once a week.
Special Requirements
Workers must have 3 months of experience in the manual harvesting of agricultural products. Must have a valid drivers license or be able to obtain within 30-60 days of hire. Employer may conduct criminal background check. Perform prolonged bending, reaching, and lifting up to 50 lbs. This work requires adherence to important standard operating procedures of food safety and quality. Also, adhere to other similar sanitary facilities practices as part of SOPs and SSOPs within Good Agricultural Practices (GAP). Good Handling Practices (GHP) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) for Food Safety. Workers may be offered more than the standard 7 hours of work in a single workday. Workers may volunteer to work additional hours and hours on Sundays when work is available. Raises and bonuses may be offered to any seasonal worker, at the employers discretion, based on individual factors including but not limited to, performance, experience, number of hours worked in the season,
