Job description
Workers will perform assigned duties as instructed by their supervisor. Must be able to work with minimum supervision. Preparing the ground for planting. Clearing ground of rocks, sticks & roots by hand, clear brush and trees with chain saw. Use wood to build and repair boxes for digger. Manually weeding fields by hand or using hand tools. Participate in irrigation activities by setting up, operating, and repairing irrigation systems. Drain water from fields with hand tools and shovel when needed. The workers may use or operate the following tools and equipment: skid loader, digger, forklift, nail gun, power washer, drill, chopping hoes, shovels, sickle cutter. Repair, maintain and clean all hand tools and mechanical equipment prior to and after use. Workers may clean, maintain, or fix shop, potato shed or any other building. Workers may be asked to operate and repair: vehicles, all tractors (in fields), skid steer, sweet potato setter, sweet potato harvester, sweet potato bedding equipment, backhoe, plant trailer/truck and forklift. Workers may use implements on farm including, but not limited to disk, dual, do-all, chisel plow, bush hog, hipper, litter spreader, fertilizer and grain buggies, water trailer to water plants, and any other equipment related to the planting and harvesting of crops listed in this job description. Sweet Potatoes: Covering potatoes with use of bedding machine & covering with plastic. Cut slips by hand or with a knife, place in boxes to load & unload onto trucks. Walk behind potato transplanter and fill in slips by hand. Buckets may be used to pick up potatoes during fall. Worker will be riding on the digger while digging potatoes and the mechanical transplanter loading slips in planting cups. Must be able to sort, grade & pack potatoes by size quality or type Load & unload boxes on trucks trailers or sweet potato harvesters. Divining plants by hand. May also plant and harvest Purple Hull Peas, Soybeans, and Corn. Duties may vary from time to time. May drive workers to/from housing to fields and to grocery store once a week. Raises and bonuses may be offered to any seasonal worker, at the employer’s discretions, based on individual factors including but not limited to, performance, experience, number of hours worked in the season, number of seasons worked with the company, adherence to work rules & ability to follow supervisor instructions.
Special Requirements
Three (3) months of experience in hand cutting slips, use of mechanical transplanter, mechanical diggers, and sorting/grading sweet potatoes. Applicants must be 18 years or older per liability insurance requirements. Valid drivers license required. Employer may conduct background checks on all new applicants for employment at employers expense. Workers should come prepared wearing appropriate clothing and footwear for the environmental and working conditions described. Cell phone can only be used during breaks, emergencies, and communicated with supervisor when needed. All tools, supplies and equipment will be provided at no cost to the workers. Lifting requirement may have a range of 5 - 60 lbs. Workers must not have any physical limitations that would prevent them from performing duties of job, with or without reasonable accommodation.
