Job description
Work in hybrid catfish hatchery. Clean and sterilize equipment. Collect brood fish and sort male from female fish. Handle live brood fish; weigh, administer hormone shots, collect fish eggs by hand from female brood fish, collect sperm from male brood fish and fertilize eggs. Incubate and oxygenate eggs in egg hatching tanks. Move hatched eggs, sac-fry, to rearing troughs for 3-5 days. Feed swim-up fry 2-7 days and transfer to nursery ponds. Move fish to rearing ponds, feed and grow to fingerling size (3-8 inches long) for 5 to 10 months.
Record spawning output, egg hatchability, fry survival, and growth rates of fingerlings and food sized fish.
Drive tractors up to 250 HP. Work on catfish ponds; Feed fish and fingerlings Check oxygen levels and water temperature in ponds. Monitor ponds for insects and disease. Run birds off the farm ponds. Seine ponds to harvest and move fish and fingerlings. Load out fish and fingerlings for transport. Maintain record of fish harvested by weight, by fish size, number transferred etc. Hook and unhook aerators. Clean equipment (e.g. paddlewheels, buoys, etc.) Clean, inspect, and repair tanks, pumps, filters, and aerators. Perform routine maintenance and repair on boats, tractors, automotive vehicles, aerators. Operate pumps, oxygenation equipment and paddle wheel aerators. Check oxygen levels in fishponds using oxygen meters. Get ponds ready for new crop of fish; Drain and pump up ponds, clean out ponds, salt ponds, levee preparation and maintenance. Maintenance and repairs on farm property and clean shop area. Repair farm equipment-aerators, paddle wheels. etc. Mow grass with a tractor and brush hog or large mower. Weed eat, level roads, and service tractors. General farm maintenance.
(Jan. – Nov.) 1st Shift: Mon. – Fri. 7 am - 5 pm {Sat. – Sun. 7 am – 1 pm. (primarily feeding)}: Seining ponds, pond preparation, feeding fish, selecting brood fish, collecting spawn, pond maintenance, monitoring ponds, hatchery care requiring 2 – 12 hour shifts.
(Jan- Nov) 2nd Shift: Mon. – Sun. 7 pm - 7 am; checking oxygen levels, water quality, there will be break periods
Special Requirements
B6 4b. Able to drive 250 hp tractor and operate other farm equipment. B6 4e. Some heavy lifting (30 lbs.) feed. B6 4f. Work is performed outdoors and involves exposure to sun, rain, heat, cold, insects and other natural elements. B6 4g-4j. Seining requires use of arms, legs and moving whole body walking in water 4-4 1/2 feet deep, lifting, balancing, and stooping. Duties in nursery are repetitive and workers stand 100% of time. Able to swim-ponds are 6-12 feet deep. Able to handle live fish. Must be available for entire contract period and able to perform all job duties and work both shifts.
