Job description

Worker will be required to perform a variety of duties related to the production of honey, honey bees, fresh produce, fruit, and flowers. The majority of the work activities during the overall contract period, however, will be related to beekeeping.
Duties will include the following responsibilities: assemble beehives; insert honeycomb of bees into beehive or induct wild swarming bees into hive of prepared honeycomb frames; place screen plug in hive entrance; set hives near source of nectar and pollen; scrape out parasites; remove vermin; destroy superfluous queen bee cells; burn/sterilize diseased hives; uncap harvested honeycombs and extract honey; cultivate bees to produce bee colonies and queen bees; gather supers (bee boxes) and load and secure onto flatbed truck; remove and roll straps; make bee nucs; repair and maintain supers (sand, paint, etc.); check health of hives; medicate bees; add and remove supers from hive; extract honey; fill drums with honey and move to storage using hand cart; place empty supers in storage; prepare bee colonies for winter; inspect maintain, and make minor mechanical adjustments and repairs on equipment, machinery, buildings, pens, yards, and fences; blow smoke to quiet bees; open hive and pour sugar in to feed bees; make bee candy; operate/tend machines used in the production if honey; remove emptied honeycombs from machine and places them in vacant supers; cut caps from honeycombs; repair and stack honey drip pans; place pollen patties; mow/remove weeds and grass around hives and farm areas; inspect and install/remove entrance cleets; transfer damaged hive equipment and replace equipment; perform general clean-up of farm/bee/garden/orchard areas; operate vehicle, motor bike, or all-terrain vehicle; workers possessing the proper licensure may be asked to transport other farm workers; manually plant, cultivate, and harvest vegetables and fruits; use hand tools, such as shovels, trowels, hoes, tampers, pruning hooks, shears, and knives; till soil; apply fertilizers and/or pesticides; transplant, weed, thin, or prune crops/trees/flowers; clean, sort, pack, and load harvested products; construct trellises; maintain/repair/replace/move temporary fencing; maintain pollinator gardens/orchards.

Special Requirements

Applicants must have 3 months experience with beekeeping work and provide the contact information of at least one reference who can verify experience and performance.
