Job description
Attend to livestock such as cattle on a farm. Maintain heated water system so that water does not freeze and operate snow removal equipment in order to operate feed wagon. Mix feed and additives, fill feed troughs with feed and water for livestock and remove ice formed in water since the cattle cannot graze in the pasture. Examine animals to detect diseases and injuries. Apply medication to cuts and bruises that may occur with being closely confined, spray livestock with insecticide. Confine livestock in stalls. Wash and clip to prepare for calving and assist veterinarian in delivery of offspring. Bind and clamp testes or surgically remove testes to castrate livestock. Clip identifying notches or symbols on animal, or brand animal, using branding iron, to indicate ownership. Deworm cattle. Clean livestock stalls and sheds, using disinfectant solutions, brushing and shovels to minimize disease and infection. Perform pregnancy tests on cattle. Repair structures. Build wind breaks. Maintain breeding, feeding and costs records. Drive to town on occasion to pick up cattle supplies.
Special Requirements
Minimum of 3 months of experience is required. Must be able to obtain a driver's license within 30 days of hire. Lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds. The worker will be exposed to extreme temperatures. Wage rate may increase with verifiable experience. Employer may reward exceptional work with monetary or other benefits in addition to those listed here in his sole discretion.
