Job description
Load rolling racks filled with plants into cargo area of truck. Regularly climb into and out of trucks and trailers. Inspect loads to ensure that plants/racks are secure. Secure plants/racks for transport using ropes, blocks, chains, binders, or covers. Check all load-related documentation for completeness and accuracy. Must assure accurate identification and count of plants when pulling orders to load onto delivery trucks. Check vehicles to ensure that mechanical, safety, and emergency equipment is in good working order. Maneuver trucks into and out of loading and unloading positions. Drive straight truck to/from delivery destinations. Repeatedly open and close manual lift gates on truck. Load-unload plants/racks. Handle equipment and plants carefully to prevent damage. Drive trucks to weigh stations before and after loading and along routes in compliance with state regulations. Interact with roadway officials. Complete pre-trip and post-trip inspection and paperwork on trucks and trailers. Report any issues to direct supervisor. Clean/maintain lights, windows, and mirrors, and vehicle exterior. Add engine oil and fuel as needed. Perform preventative maintenance. Must be able to drive in rain, snow, and other hazardous conditions as needed. Drive in both on-road (paved) and off-road conditions. May drive other vehicle types. Use GPS and/or maps to navigate to destinations. Read/comprehend traffic signage and directions. Maintain log books, keep and retain copies of fuel receipts and maintain regular communication with dispatcher. Workers must operate all equipment properly and in a manner that protects operator, others, the employer's products and property. On a smaller scale, if needed, workers will use garden tools and equipment to transplant and cultivate shrubs, grasses, trees, tropicals, ornamentals, flowering perennials and annuals and fill nursery orders in accordance with specifications provided by the supervisor. Use gardening tools including hammers, trimmers, power shears, pruning shears, shears, ladders, shovels, rakes, staplers and assorted hand tools to perform nursery activities. Transplant or pot, space, label and tag plants. Dig, cut and transplant seedlings, cuttings, trees and shrubs. Propagate plants from cuttings. Plant cuttings into pots and trays. Count and check pots, plants and materials. Workers must keep pace while transplanting within an assembly line on a conveyor belt. Place plants and/or pots onto or take off of moving line. Weed, trim, sheer, water, pinch (add more breaks), prune and shape plants, shrubs and trees. Insert stakes and string for plant quality and/or for tags. Remove dead flowers as instructed. Mix potting soil and fill trays. Handle mulch, haul and spread soil, peat moss, fertilizer and other materials to condition soil using carts, shovels, wheelbarrows and tractors. Move containerized shrubs, plants and trees using tractors. Stack, rack, load and/or unload nursery commodities, tools and materials. Read orders to ascertain sizes, types and quantities of plants. Select, harvest, prepare and load plants for shipping. Lay ground cover. Apply pesticides and herbicides. Inspect the color and condition of plants and bud ties to assess quality and to detect the presence of insects or disease. Inform supervisors of the presence of insects, disease or quality concerns. Operate, clean, maintain, repair and install irrigation. Regulate, maintain and repair greenhouse conditions and indoor and outdoor irrigation systems. Assist in the assembly of nursery buildings and repair nursery facilities. Operate, repair, clean and maintain nursery vehicles and equipment. Workers are also responsible for nursery sanitation duties including cleaning and maintaining work areas, sanitizing greenhouses, picking up trash and sweeping floors. May trap and destroy pests. Using the employer's vehicles, licensed drivers may transport workers and be offered additional hours.
Special Requirements
Three months of verifiable experience required driving straight truck (box truck) required. Work in inclement weather conditions including hot, cold, and/or wet weather; lift, carry and load up to 20 lbs. of potted plants. Walk, sit and stand for extended periods of time. Reach, stoop, push and pull rolling racks full of plants repetitively. Must be 21 years or older. Class A CDL or equivalent required. Employer is a drug and alcohol-free workplace. Drug testing is conducted post-hire at the employers expense and is not part of the interview process. Negative results are required before starting work. To comply with insurance requirements, background checks will be conducted.
