Job description
Bus Driver, Transit. Drive a bus over the road to transport farm workers on a planned or scheduled basis as directed by the employer or supervisor. Driver may pick up workers from different housing sites or pick up points and take them to assigned work site, transit between work sites, and return workers back to the housing site or pick up point at the end of the work day. Make trips to grocery stores, laundromat, airport, and governmental agencies, medical and dental offices. Direct and monitor the work of casual and seasonal help during planting and harvesting. Must abide by precise instructions and strict but necessary safety rules and policies. Inspect vehicles and check gas, oil, and water levels prior to departure. Maintain cleanliness of bus. Handle passenger emergencies or disruptions. Make minor repairs to vehicle and change tires. Employer assures that driver will be paid the offered wage rate for actual driving time, including but not limited to trips to fuel vehicle and time spent maintaining the vehicle. Direct and monitor the work of casual and seasonal help during planting and harvesting. Workers may be requested to submit to random drug or alcohol tests at no cost to the worker. Failure to comply with the request or testing positive may result in immediate termination. All testing will occur post-hire and is not a part of the interview process. Negative result may be required post-hire and before commencing work. Must be able to lift 75 lbs. Use of cell phone or other personal electronic device while driving strictly prohibited by law and violation may result in immediate termination. Must commit to entire anticipated period of employment. Must be properly licensed by a U.S. state or foreign equivalent with passenger endorsement and medical certificate to operate bus. Must be at least 23 years of age. Must obtain a DOT medical examiner’s certificate before commencing work. Requires 12 months CDL driving history.
Agricultural Equipment Operator: Operate tractors to prepare the soil for planting, plant, transplant, cultivate, machine harvest and plow crops. Operate towed machines such as transplanters and sprayers to plant, fertilize, dust and spray crops. May operate peanut combine. May operate forklift to load and unload only flue-cured tobacco. Observe and listen to machinery operation to detect problems. Troubleshoot, repair and perform minor maintenance on farm vehicles and equipment. Perform farm, field and shed sanitation duties. Mow grass and operate trimmer around farm buildings. Direct and monitor the work of casual and seasonal help during planting and harvesting. Operate farm vehicles to haul crops and drive other farmworkers from place to place around the farm properties (including on public roads to reach farmer’s fields) during the workday. May work in greenhouse. Workers will walk along rows as specified by employer and remove weeds and grass from fields by hand or using a hoe. Workers will cultivate by hand or with mechanical cultivator attached to farm tractor. The use or possession or being under the influence of illegal drugs or alcohol during working time is prohibited. Workers may be requested to submit to random drug or alcohol tests at no cost to the worker. Failure to comply with the request or testing positive may result in immediate termination. All testing will occur post-hire and is not a part of the interview process. Negative result may be required post-hire and before commencing work. Must be able to lift 75 lbs. to shoulder height repetitively throughout the workday. Requires minimum 3 months verifiable work experience operating 140+ h.p. tractors with farm implements. Basic literacy and mathematical ability required. Applicants must possess proper and current driver’s license (minimum Class C or its foreign equivalent) to legally operate farm trucks on public highways in North Carolina.
