Job description

Apply fertilizers to plants according to formulas determined by supervisor. Mix, load, and apply pesticides, herbicides, or fungicides to trees and shrubs or botanical crops according to instructions according to safety practices and label instructions to maintain plant quality. Direction may be also given from supervisor. Clean and maintain the equipment to insure proper functioning. Scout for insect, disease, and other pest pressures, participate in ornamental trials including making trial applications, recording data, and trial evaluation. Report information about plants and plant growth. Assist in operating and maintaining irrigation equipment and climate control systems, assist with the direction of weeding crews. Operate tractors, tractor-drawn machinery, truck driving / picks up to move sprayer, and self-propelled machinery to fertilize, spray, or mix nursery soil, GK, pack tanks, air blasters, backpacking, four-wheelers, hand wands, need to understand or go through training to use raven spray monitors, strong computer record keeping.

Perform irrigation activities, maintain accurate records in accordance with ODA and OSHA laws and maintain safety practices. Must have the ability to work with the crew periodically and organize & prioritize spraying tasks.

May perform other job duties pursuant to 45-2092.00, Farmworkers and Laborers, Crop, Nursery and Greenhouse.

Special Requirements

This position requires six months experience working in a wholesale nursery handling both manual and machine tasks associated with nursery production and harvest activities; OR documentation of six months of educational/vocational training in horticulture or agriculture.

Must be able to take and pass the license test required to apply pesticides within 90 days of start of employment.

Must possess the ability to understand verbal and/or written work instructions. Must be able to read, speak and write English.

Must be able to lift and carry 60 lbs.
