Job description
Perform any combination of the following tasks to attend sheep during the lambing season: adjust repair and service farm, sheep and milking machinery, equipment and tools and notify employer of malfunctions; administer medication as needed; assist in the shearing of sheep by herding sheep into corrals and through the shearing plant; assist with docking; assist with hoof trimming to reduce the occurrence of discomfort and disease; assist with sorting and cutting of culls; attend to lambing ewes (including night checks); brand, tag, clip or otherwise mark young animals for identification purposes; care for young offspring by drying them off, mixing and feeding supplemental milk, treating umbilical cords, vaccinating, splinting, and cleaning feeding equipment and the lamb barn; clean and sanitize udders in the milking parlor, milking equipment and tools, milk handling equipment, exterior entrance and exit areas twice daily; clean sheep facilities, pens and barns; clean, build, maintain and/or repair fences, handling facilities and livestock equipment to ensure the safety and health of sheep and employees; closely inspect and monitor udders daily and move ewes to the milking rotation when needed; feed and water and ensure adequate provision of both; herd ewes to and from the parlor and assist with the milking process twice daily; identify ewes that are preparing to give birth; inspect and clean sheep waterers; inspect hay feed bunks and fork hay daily, and empty and clean bunks as necessary; keep records of lamb ear tag numbers by sex; keep records of the ear tag numbers of each ewe and her lambs; may assist with the operation and maintenance of hot water heaters and HVAC systems as well as laboratory equipment. May operate paint sprayers, hand painting tools, grass watering systems, lawn mowers and weed trimmers and sprayers. These duties will; monitor for birthing problems and take correct actions when problems are identified; move sheep to appropriate pens and through the milking parlor; operate and tend all milking and milk handling equipment in a manner that adheres to employer’s operating, cleaning and sanitation protocols; report to employer dehydration & other indicators of deterioration in animal body condition/behavioral changes indicating malnutrition or disease; sort sheep according to size, vigor and sex.
Perform any combination of the following tasks required to operate equipment related to the care and production of sheep: operate and tend equipment such as pickups, 4-wheelers, tractors, tub grinders and skid steers trailers (livestock, utility and flatbed, high pressure washers/sprayers; wet/dry shop vacs; feed mixers; augers; floor cleaners; chemical mixers/sprayers;.
Special Requirements
Required to: perform tasks capably and efficiently without close supervision, live and work singly or in small groups of workers in isolated areas for extended periods of time, to operate equipment and machinery required to perform job duties indicated in a safe and responsible manner, work outdoors in all types of weather and may experience occasional exposure to hazards such as poisonous snakes, biting insects and extreme temperature, maintain and manage remote housing locations in a safe and responsible manner, work with and around farm machinery such as tractors, UTVs and ATVs for supplemental feeding purposes and movement of livestock, demonstrate commonsense and awareness of safe equine handling procedures, i.e. no running in barns, shouting, abusing animals, leaving gates/stall doors/feed rooms open or smoking in and around barns, sheds or hay storage, handle animals using low stress handling methods, meet personal hygiene requirements, wear parlor uniforms, comply with
