Job description

Workers will perform assigned duties as instructed by their supervisor. Duties may vary from time to time. Must be able to work with minimum supervision and in extreme weather conditions. Preparing the ground for planting. Clearing ground of rocks, sticks, & roots by hand, clear brush and trees. General Field & Fence Maintenance. Use wood to build and repair boxes for digger(s). Manually weeding fields by hand or using hand tools. Draining water from fields with hand tools and shovel when needed. Load & unload boxes on trucks, trailers, or sweet potato transplanters and/or harvesters. Repair maintain and clean all hand tools and mechanical equipment prior to and after use. Build or repair barns or potato sheds. Workers may be asked to operate skid steer, tractor (pulling mechanical digger), and skid-loader (to load & unload trucks & trailers). May transport workers to field and/or grocery in farm-provided passenger vehicle(s). Soybeans, Peas, Sweet Corn, Watermelons, Pumpkins and Tomatoes: Workers may plant/harvest soybeans, sweet corn, watermelons, pumpkins, and tomatoes. Workers may plant and harvest peas. Workers may use hand tools such as knives to harvest product from plants. Workers may shell peas with a pea sheller. Workers may be asked to drive truck(s) to haul soybeans and corn. Sweet Potatoes: Covering potatoes with use of bedding machine & covering with plastic. Pulling plastic from covered potatoes. Cut slips by hand with knife, place in boxes to load & unload onto trucks and trailers. Walk behind potato transplanter and fill in slips by hand. Riding mechanical transplanter and loading slips in planting cups. Divining plants by hand. Use of mechanical digging equipment to dig potatoes. May harvest sweet potatoes by hand with use of buckets. Must be able to sort, grade, & pack potatoes by size, quality, or type. Workers may be asked to drive trucks to haul/transport crops, supplies, tools, or farm workers and operate farm equipment-driving in-field trucks/ATV’s, skid-steers, forklifts, or tractors using implements including hipper disk, dual, chisel, plow, bush-hog, gravity-flow buggy, potato trans-planter or potato harvester. Workers with a clean driving record (no major moving violations such as but not limited to driving while intoxicated or reckless driving) and able to obtain an insurable driver’s license may drive farm-owned vehicles. Employer may provide one or more vehicles to workers (van, bus, or pickup truck) for multi-purpose use on an as needed basis (e.g., driving workers from employer-provided housing directly to the farm, around the farm properties during the work day, and possibly carrying equipment/supplies with them) and this may involve the worker(s) operating vehicles to reach the other farm properties to perform their work.

Special Requirements

Applicants must be 18 years or older. Three months of experience required in hand cutting slips, use of mechanical transplanter, grading/sorting/loading harvested products, & use of mechanical harvesting & cultivating equipment. Valid Drivers License required-if asked to drive vehicles. Lifting requirement of 5-60 lbs. The employer may conduct a criminal background check on all new applicants at the employers expense. All tools, supplies, & equipment will be provided at no cost to workers.
