Job description
Burley tobacco- workers will do greenhouse maintenance of plants (trimming, mowing, moving to outdoor float beds, maintaining water levels, until plants are ready to set. Setting the plants into the fields, chopping weeds from between the rows of plants, topping (removing the flower blooms/suckers from the plants. Cutting - workers will use knives and spikes to cut down the plants and place onto wooden tobacco sticks and stand them in the fields. After 2 to 3 days, workers will go back and load the sticks onto trailers/wagons, and haul them to the barn, where they will hang / house the plants onto racks/tear poles in the barns. After several weeks of the tobacco drying/curing out (weather permitting) the sticks will be taken down and placed into piles for stripping. Stripping is done in 3 separate grades, based on color and appearance. The stripped leaves will then be tied up in burlap sheets/ bags,and stored until they are baled. Baling involves placing the leaves into large baling machines, where they will be compressed into 500 to 600 pound bales, wrapped with cardboard and marked for selling. The workers will do various types of general farm maintenance jobs in between the processes of the tobacco season ( mowing, weed eating, cleaning equipment,).
Special Requirements
All workers will be trained by the employer, before each phase of the tobacco processes, so that they understood what to do and what tools they need.
