Job description
CUTTERS: The worker will walk down the watermelon field rows where the watermelon will be harvested. The worker will first cut the vine off the watermelon with a small knife and turn the watermelon over.
LOADERS: While the field truck is in slow movement and in a row of up to 5 workers to each side of the field truck, the worker will bend over harvesting the ripe watermelon which can vary in weight from 20lbs to 60lbs from the ground and tossing the watermelon to the worker next to him and this worker will toss the watermelon to the next worker and so on, until the watermelon is then tossed to the person inside the field truck who will place the watermelon on the floor.
UNLOADERS: When the field truck is full, the workers will unload the watermelon from the bus.
GENERAL DUTIES: Plastic pulling, mulch clean-up, general clean-up and other miscellaneous duties may also be done.
Special Requirements
The majority of the workday is spent on one's feet and outdoors. Workers rarely stand in one place for any period of time. Workers must be able to stand, sit, stoop, squat, kneel, crouch, bend, (from the waist) push, pull, reach, lift, and carry items weighing up to 20 pounds in the course of performing required activities. Work is performed in outdoor agricultural fields and involves exposure to sun, wind, rain, soil, mud, dust, heat, cold, and other natural elements. The worker must be able to withstand working in direct sunlight, and weather conditions ranging from hot and humid weather, moderate rain and cold while performing their required job duties. Workers should come prepared wearing appropriate clothing and footwear for the environmental and working conditions described. The work entails exposure to soil, plants, insects, and plant materials such as, but not limited to pesticides and fertilizers.
