Job description
General orchard work requires trimming and pruning, cutting away dead or excess branches from apple trees to maintain the health and value of the tree, using hand saws and pruners, power pruners, step ladders, trimming clippers and pruning hooks. Worker's ability to keep hands and arms steady while moving and trimming, ability to bend, stretch, twist or reach with your body, arms and/or legs. Prepare fields and plant new trees. Harvest apples from tree and deposit them in a bushel picking bucket to a bin. Manually harvest fruit using hand tools such as picking buckets, step ladders and boxes (bins). Apples injured by bruising during picking shall not exceed 1% (WNY) for fresh and 1% (WNY) for processing. Productivity must be at least 7 bins per day of fresh (20-bushel bin) or 8 bins per day of processing (20-bushel bin). Repair of apple bins, replace broken and damaged boards with new boards using a hammer and nails. Employer will furnish to workers, without cost, all tools and equipment required in the performance of the duties assigned.
Workers with a clean MVR and able to obtain an insurable driver's license may be requested to operate employer-owned trucks or other multi-purpose vehicles to haul tools, supplies, crops, and transport workers (whether on or off farm) to and from the worker housing to the farm properties and occasionally around the farm properties during the workday including on public roads to reach the fields where work will be performed; and/or may transport workers to the grocery store, bank, or laundry facilities on an as needed basis. Driving does not occur on a regular schedule. No applicants or workers will be rejected for not possessing a driver’s license or who may be unwilling to drive company vehicles. Such duties are completely optional and may be declined by the worker at his or her sole discretion.
Special Requirements
3 months verifiable experience working in an apple orchard required.
