Job description
General Orchard Worker
Manually plant, cultivate, and harvest apples. Use hand tools, such as shovels, trowels, hoes, tampers, pruning hooks, shears, and knives. Duties include tilling soil and applying fertilizers; transplanting, weeding, thinning, or pruning crops; applying pesticides; cleaning, packing, and loading harvested products. Train trees on trellises, repair fences and farm buildings. Harvest apples by hand. Inform farmers or farm managers of crop progress. Clear and maintain irrigation ditches. Record information about crops. Apples injured by bruising during picking shall not exceed 1% (WNY) for fresh and 1% (WNY) for processing. Productivity must be at least 4 20 bu. Bins (80 bushels) for fresh market and/or 5 20 bu. Bins (100 bushels) processing apples per 8 hour day. Workers are expected to work at least the number of days and hours specified.
The employer will provide 1 day of training and/or allow 1 day of work for worker to reach production standards if applicable. Meeting the company productivity standard will determine retention of all workers. Underperformance will be cause for progressive discipline and termination.
Field Monitor
1. Relay daily instructions to assigned crews. 2. Scan and attach tags to bins. 3. Record amounts of fruit picked within assigned crews. 4. Alert management of any issues at work sites. 5. Check fruit for size and quality.
Special Requirements
The employer will provide 1 day of production standards training at the start of the season. Training will be ongoing as part of daily instructions.
