Job description

Watermelon - Duties may vary from time to time. Workers will perform assigned duties as instructed by their supervisor. Perform manual labor. Workers will harvest, cultivate, cut, pick, and field pack watermelons in the field. Duties include cleaning, loading, and unloading harvested products. Grade and sort products according to factors such as color, species, length, width, appearance, feel, and quality to ensure correct processing and usage. Discard inferior or defective products and/or foreign matter, and place acceptable products in containers for further processing. Weigh products or estimate their weight, visually or by feel. Place products in containers according to grade and mark grades on containers. Measure, weigh, and count products and materials. Examine and inspect containers, materials, and products to ensure that packing specification are met. Workers must perform manual labor to pull plastic from the field and load onto a trailer. Removal of irrigation equipment. Clean and maintain work area and all tools and containers. Vegetables: Workers will field pick and pack vegetables in the field. Use hand tools such as shovels, trowels, hoes, tampers, pruning hooks, shears, and knives. Duties may include applying fertilizers, transplanting, pulling weeds, raking, cleaning around shed area, thinning or pruning crops, cleaning, grading, and packing harvested product. Workers will also do staking, tying, loading, removing, and unloading of stakes. May do minor repairs to fences and farm buildings and participate in irrigation activities. Duties will also include operating forklift, assisting with minor repairs and maintenance.

Special Requirements

Must be 18 years or older. The employer may conduct a criminal background check on all new applicants for employment at the employer's expense. Must assist with all Good Agricultural Practices policies. Most of the workday is spent on one's feet and outdoors. Workers may stand in one place for any period of time. Workers must be able to climb, stand, sit, stoop, squat, kneel, crouch, bend (from the waist), push, pull, reach, and lift 10-100 lbs. Work is performed in outdoor agricultural fields and involves exposure to sun, wind, rain, soil, mud, dust, heat, cold, and other natural elements. Workers must be able to withstand working in the direct sunlight and weather conditions ranging from hot and humid weather, moderate rain and cold while performing their required job duties. Workers should expect periods of little/no work during harvesting time due to uncontrollable weather conditions. Hours and day of work may vary due to these conditions.
