Job description

Crops/Commodities: nursery stock, fruit trees in various container sizes for seasonal planting in nursery growing grounds field and specialized screen house for marketable products. The majority of the work activities will be field preparation for transplanting trees, with transplanting and performing general maintenance to screen house for the transplanting areas. Workers will perform work including but not limited to: transplant, propagate from cuttings and nursery stock, bare root stock, seed, cultivate, seedling, translate, place trees in containers, fill with soil media and irrigate with water. Workers load and unload plants onto carts, trucks, trailers and tractors to transport trees into the planting machine line assembly. Once nursery stock trees is planted in the production line, trees are then loaded onto carts, trucks, trailer and tractors to be transported to nursery outside field or inside screen house area where trees are placed in designated growing area with irrigation. Trees must be handled carefully so that leaves, limbs and roots are not damaged during transplanting process and are carefully placed in straight rows according to nursery standards with drip irrigation. Workers will transplant containerized fruit trees from 5 gallon and larger containers. Trees will be gathered by size and variety, pulled out from current container size, placed in larger container, filled with soil media, packed tightly with soil and then irrigated with water. Outdoor trees will then be carted to growing area or trees will be loaded into farm equipment, then placed in field with irrigation. Plants are sorted and inventoried by variety and container size. Transplanting will either occur outdoor or inside planting automation building. Fill, lift and carry various size pots with soil and plants weighing as much as 60 pounds. Plants must be handled carefully when planted, loaded and unloaded so that minimal leaves, limbs and roots are broken during transplanting process. Workers will perform work including but not limited to planting, transplanting, watering in field and screen houses. Propagate small plants, seedlings or cuttings. Plants are carried or carted to planting area to by hand or by small tree carts. Load plants onto carts, trailers or trucks to transport to final growing area directed by supervisor. Load and unload plants from trucks and trailers. Proficient and safe use of hand tools including but not limited to tree carts, shovels, clippers and tie tape machine. Install posts and attaching ties from planted trees to support stakes. Mechanical weeding using long-handled hand tool, removal of excess plant growth from grounds. Pruning and trimming suckers and branches on trees to specific specs provided by supervisor. Work requires repetitive movements, extensive walking, twisting, bending, lifting and shoveling. Workers are expected to perform duties including lifting and loading of product. Workers will assist in loading trucks with planted product weighing up to and including 60 pounds and lifting to a height of 5 feet for long periods of time. Supervisor(s) will provide instructions and directions to workers. Workers must be able to comprehend and follow instructions and communicate effectively to supervisors. Unusual, complex or non-routine activities will be supervised. Workers expected to perform basic duties in a timely and proficient manner without close supervision. Employer will instruct workers in the safety and operation of any equipment before use. Employer will provide all necessary safety training for preventing injuries in the workplace. Proficient and safe use of hand tools including but not limited to shovels and clippers. Failure to comply with safety requirements and operating instructions may result in termination. Must wear assigned personal protective equipment when required. Must report for work daily wearing work clothing and boots or other durable foot-wear.

Special Requirements

This job requires a minimum of three months of prior agricultural experience working in a nursery, green house or crop farm handling both manual and machine tasks associated with commodity production and harvest activities. Applicants must be able to furnish verbal or written statement establishing relevant prior work experience. Workers must be able to perform manual and mechanized tasks with accuracy and efficiency. Must be able to lift/carry 60 lbs. Employer paid post-hire drug and alcohol testing is required upon reasonable suspicion of use.
