Job description

Transport cut sugarcane from Member's growing field to rail head concentration point on a farm owned or leased by the UNITED STATES SUGAR CORPORATION and loaded for rail transport to its mill. The sugarcane loading and transport work under this job order will be performed, as dispatched under the direction of the Association and in coordination with the United States Sugar Corporation (“U.S. Sugar”) and the grower members of the Association, in connection with the fixed site sugarcane farming operations of the member growers of the Association for the purpose of hauling their cut sugarcane from the respective grower members' fields to a rail loading concentration point and unloading the sugarcane into an elevated loading station for rail transport to the U.S. Sugar mill using equipment belonging to U.S. Sugar or an affiliate of US Sugar. Due to the geographical size and locations of the member growers' farms, part of the transport work will occur on public and private farm roads belonging to the respective member growers. Additionally, transport work could include transport within the sugarcane fields themselves on the U.S. Sugar farms and on the farms of the member growers. The agricultural truck driver's essential work activity requires safe transportation and offloading into the designated rail elevator loading station of the highly perishable sugarcane crop from the member growers' growing field and mechanically load into harvest trucks and transportation by the truck operator. Drivers working within this job description will haul sugarcane to a location within the same field or to another close-by location on U.S. Sugar's land that is a concentration point. Once arriving at the closest available elevated rail concentration point, the driver must safely enter the loading ramp and safely exit the loading ramp after the ramp attendant has off-loaded the sugarcane into a railcar. The agricultural truck driver is required to complete each step of the transportation process from the in-field loading station through the off-loading onto rail cars at the closest available concentration point as directed by a designated representative of the Association's harvest superintendent, as part of necessary field-to-processing facility activities for the sugarcane crop harvest. Before moving his or her assigned truck and attached cane transport trailer from their parked location, the agricultural truck driver will complete a pre-trip safety inspection of the truck and cane-transport trailer, including adding engine fluids (coolant, motor oil, etc.), checking brakes and tires, and ensuring the truck, trailer and all equipment are fit for service. The agricultural truck driver monitors the entire in-field trailer loading process to ensure proper amounts of the sugarcane crop are loaded onto his or her trailer and the weight is distributed within the transport trailer within applicable Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations. After the sugarcane has been safely loaded onto the trailer for which the driver is responsible, he or she drives the loaded sugarcane directly from the in-field farm location where it was grown to the nearest on-farm concentration point at a field loading station that is part of U.S. Sugar's rail system to transfer the sugarcane to a U.S. Sugar railcar. It is imperative that the agricultural truck driver collects and delivers the raw sugarcane crop from within the grower member's field to the nearest available concentration point at a rail loading station within hours of the time the sugarcane is severed from its roots because of the perishable nature of this raw crop. Time spent moving the raw crop to the processing mill results in deterioration of its quality and sugar content, and thus every reasonable effort is made to minimize the time from when the sugarcane is severed from its roots until the time it arrives at the mill.

Special Requirements

Must possess 3 months prior experience operating 18 wheelers. Agricultural truck drivers must be in possession of a valid drivers license that includes authorization to operate the type of truck used to transport sugarcane. All agricultural truck drivers are required to pass a drug and alcohol test prior to operating equipment that transports sugarcane and must comply with the U.S. Department of Transportation random drug testing program requirements, safety requirements, and good agricultural practices. Workers will sit for extended periods of time and perform repetitive movements. Drug testing will be conducted post-hire but before operating any equipment. Such drug and alcohol testing will be performed at the expense of the employer. Negative results are required before starting work.
