Job description
Southern Minnesota Beet Sugar Cooperative seeks Sugar Beet Piler Laborers. The duties include:
• Monitor beets being delivered and unloaded by farmers at the piling sites;
• Guide, position, or move equipment, such as booms;
• Put sugar beets into bags to test sugar content using hoist, hooks, and other devices; and
• Gather and clean scattering sugar beets and debris into piles at sugar beet plant for tractor pick-up.
These tasks are performed at the beet receiving location. The temporary workers will not be engaged in any agricultural labor or services, as the sugar beets they handle have already been harvested and transported from the farms to the sugar plants by farmers.
There are two 12 hour shifts each day during harvest season. Employees will be working 12 hour shifts seven days a week during harvest, including breaks, but likely would have some days off due to weather, maintenance downtime, etc. The temporary positions are on a split shift. The first shift hours are Monday – Sunday 12:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., with 0 to 44 hours of overtime. The second shift hours are Monday – Sunday 12:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m., with 0 to 44 hours of overtime. Overtime will be paid for any hours over 8 hours per day and 40 worked hours in a week.
The rate of pay will be $21.32 per hour. The rate of pay for returning employees who have worked 1+ season(s) is $24.02 per hour and 5+ seasons is $24.52 per hour. Overtime pay is 1.5 times the hourly rate ($31.98 - $36.78 per hour) after 8 hours per day and 40 hours worked per work week. Employees who finish the harvest season will also get $1.5 per hour for every hour worked during harvest.
Special Requirements
We require drug testing and a physical assessment. Must be able to use a shovel, climb stairs, and lift up to 50 pounds.
