Job description

In November, our corn harvest wraps up, and our focus shifts from field work to cattle care and machinery maintenance. We receive and process cows and calves for grazing on cornstalks and rye, repairing and maintaining temporary electric fence around the fields before the ground freezes. As the nights grow colder, daily tasks include breaking ice, checking water tanks, and attending to animal care. During occasional snowstorms, we need to hay the cattle and feed them with a feed truck. In January and February, we use loaders and tractors to clean the holding pens and spread manure on the fields, while also preparing for calving season by bedding pens and stalls. March is primarily dedicated to preparing tractors and tillage equipment for spring field work while repairing and maintaining the temporary electric fence from around the fields. We ship out the cows and calves in late March, so additional help is not needed beyond that time. Job duties include cleaning stalls, pens, and equipment using disinfectant solutions, brushes, shovels, water hoses, or pumps; driving farm trucks, tractors, and other equipment to distribute feed to animals; examining animals to detect illness, injury, or disease, and checking physical characteristics such as the rate of weight gain; feeding and watering livestock while monitoring food and water supplies; herding livestock to pastures for grazing or to scales, farm trucks, or other enclosures; inspecting, maintaining, and repairing equipment, machinery, buildings, pens, yards, and fences; marking livestock to identify ownership and grade using brands, tags, paint, or tattoos; mixing feed, additives, and medicines in prescribed portions; moving equipment, poultry, or livestock from one location to another manually or using farm trucks or carts; segregating animals according to weight, age, color, and physical condition; caring for animals; cleaning equipment or facilities; transporting animals, crops, or equipment; treating animal injuries or illnesses; and performing machine maintenance and equipment cleaning. Employer may provide pay increases for performance, longevity and/or experience at employer’s discretion., Employer may provide performance bonuses at the end of the contract at the employer’s discretion.
