Job description

All job duties are closely and directly related to the production of hay, watermelons, and livestock. The larger percentage of the work activities will be related to general farm work/irrigation/hay production. Perform any combination of the following tasks required in general farm work and the production of hay: all duties related to irrigation with hand lines, pivots and flood irrigation, including but not limited to, remove pipe from storage, assemble and place pipe in assigned patterns in fields, adjust alignment of pipes, operate multiple types of pumps, adjust valves to start and/or adjust water flow, operate maintain and repair all components of a pivot, shovel and pack dirt in low spots or cut trenches to direct water flow, adjust gates and pipe connections to control water flow, use proper material and methods to repair irrigation equipment, remove pipe from fields and place in storage; all duties related to the production and harvest of hay, including but not limited to, maintain/drive/attach and operate farm implements/tractors/equipment to till soil, plant, cultivate, fertilize, apply chemicals and harvest hay and watermelons, perform some maintenance and adjustments to implements/tractors/equipment, evaluate the condition of the hay crop/weather and adjust harvesting activity based on evaluation; additional farm work duties may include maintenance of farm structures, loading/unloading trucks, removal of excess plant growth from farm grounds. Perform any combination of the following tasks attending to livestock: feed and water livestock or ensure adequate provision of both; herd livestock to appropriate grazing areas; assist animals with birthing and health of offspring; examine animals to detect diseases and injuries; guard animals from predatory animals and from eating poisonous and/or noxious plants; assist with the vaccination of livestock by herding into corrals and/or stalls or manually restraining animals; apply medications to cuts and bruises; spray livestock with insecticide; assist with castration of livestock; clip identifying notches on or brand animals; assist with irrigating forage for livestock, apply weed control on grazing areas (including noxious, invasive and poisonous plant species); build and/or repair fence and livestock facilities to contain or protect livestock; clean and disinfect livestock corrals, pens and handling facilities; lift and stack bales of hay and sacks of grain and mineral onto a feed truck or wagon; assist in the maintenance of tools, machinery, equipment and livestock handling facilities necessary to livestock production. The expected work schedule is eight hours per day Monday through Saturday and may be required in a split shift due to the nature of job duties. Actual hours may vary due to weather, time of year and the requirements of hay production. Work may be offered more than the specified hours per day only required to work the hours specified.

Special Requirements: Employee must be willing to perform tasks capably and efficiently without close supervision, and live and work singly or in small groups of workers in isolated areas for extended periods of time. May be required to ride, handle, and tend horses in a manner to assure the safety and health of the worker, co-workers, horses, and livestock. The job will entail working with and around farm machinery such as tractors for haying and supplemental feeding purposes and ATVs for irrigating and the movement of livestock, periodically. Successful applicants will be expected to operate machinery and equipment in a safe and responsible manner, and further, will be expected to maintain equipment and machinery to a standard established by the employer. Employees will work outdoors in all types of weather and may experience occasional exposure to hazards such as poisonous snakes and extreme temperatures.
