Job description
Workers will pick a variety of apples by hand using company provided picking baskets. Workers will work from the ground and from aluminum ladders up to 8 feet tall. Workers will need to closely follow company instructions to ensure apples are not damaged during the picking process. Some apples may be selectively picked for size, color or condition. Workers will assist in moving empty wooden bins and/or crates in and around the orchard by hand. Sorting of apples will take place indoors using a semi-automatic sizing grader and will require workers to sort out unsuitable fruit from good quality fruit and placing good fruit into wooden crates and cardboard boxes. Full crates/boxes will be stacked on pallets. Workers may assist with production and distribution of apple cider made with at least 50% of apples grown on the employer's orchards, filling duties such as pressing apples into cider, filling cider into plastic jugs, loading jugs into crates, and stacking crates of cider. Workers will provide general orchard and other farm labor including establishing/repairing trellis, cleaning up the orchard, repairing irrigation lines, tying branches, thinning apples, mowing and cutting ground sprouts. Workers will prune apple trees using pruning tools and aluminum ladders up to 8 feet tall.
Workers will repair wooden crates and apple bins using hand and pneumatic tools. Workers will also plant, grow, pick and prepare for sale strawberries, rhubarb and other seasonal crops, and perform light maintenance and improvement of farm structures, land and equipment. Weekly
and hourly work schedules in Boxes A.6 and A.7 are merely approximate; actual hours will depend on weather and needs of the farm, and substantial voluntary overtime will probably be offered.
