Job description

GENERAL FARM RANCH WORKER must perform any combination of the following tasks to attend to the production of livestock: Calving begins in mid-February and runs to May of each year. Worker is required to assist with calving which includes examining animals to detect diseases and injuries; applying medications to cuts and bruises; vaccinating livestock by herding into corral and/or stall or manually restraining animal on the range; spraying livestock with insecticides; assists with castration of livestock; clips identifying notches on or brand animals. Long odd hours may be required during calving season. In August and September, cattle are purchased and put out on wheat pasture – no feeding required. Mother cows are out on native pasture year-round – no feeding is required. Calves are weaned in the Fall off grass pasture - no feeding is required, then calves are in confinement for 45-60 days where they are fed and cared for, then turned out to wheat pasture from November to May - no feeding is required. Calves are shipped March to May.

Foaling colts begins in April through June when worker will be required to protect the foals from mountain lions during this delicate birthing period.

In the spring of the year as temperatures begin to warm, seasonal labor is needed to tear down, and maintain fencing.
Throughout the season, worker will be required to operate farm equipment such as a tractor, bulldozer or excavator to clear fencing areas of mesquite, juniper and cactus, and to help with their highly erosional land due to 300-500 ft. elevation drops and rolling hills. Brush control is seasonal and runs 30-60 days in June and July when it is most effective to spray mesquite.

Equipment cleaning, maintenance and repairs are needed throughout the season and wrap up by mid-December. No seasonal labor is needed from mid-December to mid-February.

Worker will be required to drive truck and ATV’s on owners’ property. Most duties are performed out of doors, and entail exposure to heat, cold, dust, rain and other environmental conditions. Worker must be able to crouch, bend, lift and carry up to 100 pounds. Must be willing and able to occasionally live and work independently or in small groups of workers in isolated areas for extended periods of time. Three (3) months of experience is required.
