Job description
Plant Nursery Techs will be responsible for cultivating, maintaining, and caring for perennial trees and shrubs at the employer’s 16-acre nursery in St. Simons Island, Georgia. Duties will include planting, transplanting, cultivating, weeding, pruning, fertilizing, and applying preemergent herbicides to promote the growth and health of the plants; operating irrigation equipment to ensure plants are properly watered and reporting any irrigation issues or repair needs to supervisors; maintaining the nursery grounds by weeding, spraying, and clearing debris; loading and unloading plants and merchandise from delivery trucks; preparing and laying out growing mats for plants; and driving small utility vehicles (Kubota RTVs) to transport plants and equipment throughout the nursery property (driver’s license not required). Duties will vary by season: spring is focused on planting, repotting, fertilizing, spacing, and pruning plants; summer is focused primarily on weeding, pruning, spacing, and other plant maintenance as plants grow out; and fall is focused on pre-dormancy pruning and fertilization of crops and potentially covering them to prepare them for winter cold. Duties require workers to complete repetitive movements, stand, walk, stoop, bend, push/pull equipment, lift up to 50 pounds, and require individuals to work quickly and consistently and for long periods of time outdoors in all weather conditions (including heat and humidity). Anticipated vehicles and equipment used in duties include the following: small utility vehicles (Kubota RTVs), shovels, hoes, rakes, hand pruners, hoses, backpack blowers, fertilizer/herbicide applicators, weedeaters, mowers, trash cans. Primary anticipated plants include the following: Azaleas, Podocarpus, Ferns, Hydrangeas, Asiatic Jasmine, Roses, Pittosporum, Ligustrum, Boxwoods, Farfugium, Camellias, Ginger Lilly, Magnolias, Palms, Agapanthus, Live Oaks, Plumbago, Lantana, Philodendron, Agave, and Iris.
Schedule: 40 hours per week. Typical work schedule is Monday through Friday, 7:00am – 3:30pm, with a 30-minute lunch break. Work hours and schedule may vary. Must be flexible to work varying shifts, including evenings, weekends, and/or holidays during peak times.
