Job description

General Labor/Nursery Worker to perform the following duties:

General Labor/Nursery Worker to perform the following duties: Workers will be working with Agaves, Aloes, Yucca, Cactus, Euphorbia, Succulents, Cycads, Palms, Tropical Foliage, Bamboo, Bromeliad, Ficus, Yucca and Dasylirion. Workers will receive specific instructions on required tasks and results expected and will be closely monitored. Workers may occasionally and/or sporadically perform duties associated with the primary duties. Such work will be temporary and insubstantial agricultural labor. Workers are expected to perform and complete the assigned tasks in a professional and efficient manner while keeping up with the pace and demand according to the company’s and customers production and quality standards. Workers must be willing, able, qualified and available to complete the assigned job duties. Workers are responsible for the daily care and maintenance of plants in a nursery/greenhouse setting, continuously throughout the day perform any combination of the following duties like planting, hauling watering, pruning, preparing, trimming and shaping, weeding, inspecting plants for pets and disease, loading and unloading. Workers will use garden gloves, hand tools, such as shovels, trowels, hoes, machete, pruning shears and brooms when needed to complete tasks. Workers prepare soil mixture and growth media by hand or using specialized hand tools. Selects the proper size of container, places the container on the table and while gently holding the container with one hand. Then, using a hand shovel reaches over to collect the desired amount of soil and pours soil into pot, chooses the plant while gently handling the roots to avoid damage and places into the center of the container, and continues to fill pot with soil to the proper soil level and gently firms around the roots if needed. Once completed, worker moves completed containers to a table until all the orders have been completed, then loads onto a UTV or push card to transport to a greenhouse or growing area. Workers properly water newly potted plants to settle soil and support root establishment. Workers will repot growing plants into larger containers as needed. The process is repeated. Workers walk around the nursery and greenhouses to inspect, clean, trim and shape plants of excess, damaged or quality compromising leaves by either hand or the use of specialized tools when needed. When needed, workers water plants with either watering cans or use the hoses located in each location. Workers are responsible for daily, weekly and periodically maintaining the greenhouse and nursery workspaces and production areas clean and organized. Workers will rotate, inspect and discard inventory that is damaged or broken. Workers must be able to count, properly classify, load and unload plants either onto a utility task vehicle (UTV), trailer or push carts and transport to and from the nursery/greenhouse areas. Workers must be able to lift, push, pull and carry to 60 lbs. repetitively throughout the workday.

Special Requirements

3 months of agricultural experience in any of the commodities harvested in this job order. Applicants must furnish verifiable job references or comparable third-party documentation from recent employers to establish acceptable prior experience. This requirement will be applied equally to all new foreign and domestic candidates.

The Company may require the worker to submit to a post-hire drug/alcohol test, at the employers expense, upon the occurrence of a reportable incident or accident, or upon reasonable suspicion. Drug screening is post-offer, can be random, and is at no cost to the workers.

Specific requirements include lifting up to 60 pounds frequently. Must be able to use hand tools, including a dibble stick. Must be able to work under conditions where skin and clothing become heavily soiled with mud, water, grease, etc. Must be able to work outdoors in inclement weather conditions, including sun, rain, cold, high winds, etc. and indoors where in humid conditions.
