Job description
The job duties on the farm are extensive, especially during the busy seasons. These duties include preparing fields for planting, attaching various farm implements like plows, discs, sprayers, or harvesters to tractors using bolts and hand tools, and operating tractors, planters, sprayers, seed drills, and manure spreaders. Workers are also involved in planting, weeding, spraying, fertilizing, and harvesting crops. This includes applying pesticide solutions to control insects, fungi, and weed growth and irrigating soil using portable pipes or ditches. Maintaining ditches, pipes, and pumps for irrigation is also part of the job. There is also significant work related to the handling and movement of crops and materials. Workers will load and unload crops using conveyors, forklifts, transfer augers, or by hand, using tools such as shovels or pitchforks. They are also responsible for mixing specified materials or chemicals, adjusting mechanisms on machinery, and observing machinery for any malfunctions. Agricultural data must be recorded, and workers drive pickup trucks to haul crops, supplies, and tools. Routine maintenance and repairs of equipment, cleaning of stalls and pens, and maintenance of machinery are also essential duties. In addition to crop-related tasks, cattle management is a significant responsibility on the farm. The workforce will drive trucks, tractors, and other equipment to distribute feed, examine animals for illness or injury, and monitor their physical characteristics, including weight gain. Workers will herd livestock to pastures or scales and ensure that animals have access to food and water. Equipment, machinery, buildings, pens, yards, and fences all need regular inspection and maintenance. Livestock must be marked for ownership and grade, and workers will mix feed and medicines in prescribed portions. When it comes to the care of the animals, employees will provide medical treatment, administer vaccinations, and arrange for veterinary care when necessary. Animals will be segregated according to weight, age, and physical condition, and workers will shift them between grazing areas to ensure adequate food supply. In addition, animals may be sprayed with disinfectants and insecticides, and workers may assist with bathing or dipping the animals. Maintenance of forestry, hunting, or agricultural equipment, as well as maintaining inventories and operational records, are ongoing tasks. Workers will also prepare materials or solutions for use with animals or plants and transport animals, crops, or equipment as needed. Other responsibilities include agricultural drainage installation, using manual labor and both hand tools and heavy equipment. Employees also haul feed and grain from the field to the farm using manual-shift, non-CDL semi-trucks. The upkeep of the farmyard and ditches involves using a mower and weed trimmer, and workers may also use the farm pickup truck to retrieve parts and supplies from retailers or other businesses. Grain and dryer storage areas need constant maintenance, which includes climbing ladders, loading and unloading trucks, and moving augers. Regular equipment maintenance is required, often involving the use of power tools, torches, and welders. Disposal of garbage and recycling, tree trimming, and preparing firewood for the farm's heating system are other key duties. Other tasks include preparing and pumping liquid manure, using skid steers and utility vehicles to remove rocks from tilled and planted fields, maintaining gravel driveways and lanes, and clearing snow during early Fall precipitation. Finally, workers are also responsible for unloading and loading cattle, which requires attention to detail and care for the animals. The overall scope of tasks on the farm is broad and requires a workforce capable of adapting to different demands throughout the year. During the busy Spring, Summer, and Fall months, additional labor may be necessary to keep up with the work, but during
