Job description

Crops/Commodities:
Plant, cultivate and harvest corn, oats, sorghum, millet and soybeans. Prepare fields for planting. Attach farm implements such as plows, discs, sprayers, or harvesters to tractors, using bolts and hand tools. Operate tractors, planters, trucks, grain cart and other farm equipment. Load and unload crops or materials, manually or using conveyors, forklifts, or transfer augers. Load hoppers, containers, or conveyors to feed machines with products, using forklifts, transfer augers, suction gates, shovels, or pitchforks, mix specified materials or chemicals, and dump solutions, powders, or seeds into machinery. Observe and listen to machinery operation to detect equipment malfunctions. Load crops and unload crops. Operate equipment to harvest crops, drive pickup trucks to haul crops, supplies, and tools. Prepare materials or solutions for plant use. Inspect, adjust, and complete routine maintenance and repairs on equipment. Inspect, maintain, and repair equipment, machinery, buildings, pens, yards, and fences. Operate tractors to help with field work, rock roll beans, mow, rake, bale, stack, haul hay. As a minor activity assist with livestock activities including but not limited to weaning calves from their mothers in the fall and background feed them; distribute feed to animals and check physical characteristics, such as rate of weight gain, feed and water livestock; monitor food and water supplies; herd livestock to pastures for grazing or to scales, trucks, or other enclosures; mark livestock to identify ownership and grade, using brands, tags, paint, or tattoos; mix feed, additives, and medicines in prescribed portions; administer vaccinations when and where needed; move equipment, poultry, or livestock from one location to another, manually or using trucks or carts; patrol grazing lands on horseback or using all-terrain vehicles; perform duties related to livestock reproduction, such as breeding animals within appropriate timeframes, performing artificial inseminations, and helping with animal births; provide medical treatment, such as administering medications and vaccinations, or arrange for veterinarians to provide more extensive treatment; segregate animals according to weight, age, color, and physical condition, shift animals between grazing areas to ensure that they have sufficient access to food; spray livestock with disinfectants and insecticides, or dip or bathe animals; care for animals, clean equipment or facilities; perform animal breeding procedures; transport animals and treat animal injuries or illnesses. Workers must be able to comprehend and follow instructions and communicate effectively to supervisors. Workers expected to perform basic duties in a proficient manner without close supervision. Allergies to ragweed, goldenrod, honeybees, insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, or related chemicals may affect a worker's ability to perform the job. Persons seeking employment in this position must be available for the entire period requested by the employer.

Employer may request, but not require, workers to work more than the stated daily hours and/or on a worker's Sabbath or federal holidays. Worker must report to work at designated time and place each day. Daily or weekly work schedule may vary due to weather, sunlight, temperature, crop conditions, and other factors. Employer will notify workers of any change to start time. Workers will have an unpaid lunch break.

Longer hours are required during the season when planting and harvesting takes place.
TERMINATION. Prior to any termination for cause, employer evaluates workers' performance of required tasks and compliance with Work Rules and other employer policies.

Special Requirements

Three months of verifiable farm work experience required. Work outside in inclement weather condition. Walk, sit, stand, bend, stoop, reach, push, pull and perform repetitive movements. Lift, carry and load up to 75 lbs. Must obtain a standard driver's license to drive in SD to haul crop. Age requirement of 35 years or older.
