Job description
Burley Tobacco: Duties include, but not limited to: Nursery care, laying, trimming, top trimming, storing and greasing and peeling. Workers will be trained for a period of two days (14 hours) after which the worker is expected to cut 100 sticks per hour - does not include dropped sticks. Other related jobs and duties may include cutting weeds between plants with a hoe: removing tops and shoots from plants, applying fertilizer (side dressing). Dark Fired Tobacco: Duties include but are not limited to: Nursery removal, placing, cutting buffers/greasing, cutting, storing and peeling. Workers will be required to cut wood and haul it to the barn to burn the tobacco. Wooden boards covered with sawdust are placed under the tobacco that is hanging in the barn. The boards are burned to smoke the tobacco and this is repeated until the tobacco reaches the appropriate color. Workers will remove the ashes that remain after the tobacco is burned. The worker is required to cut 50-60 sticks per hour. Air Cured Tobacco: Duties include but are not limited to: Nursery care, placing, cutting buffers/greasing, cutting, storing and peeling. Other Related Duties for All Types of Tobacco: Workers will cut the weeds between the plants with a pick or shovel; cutting tops and suckers on plants, and applying fertilizer.
Forage: Duties will include, but are not limited to: Land preparation, operating tillage equipment, cutting equipment. Take the hay bales to the storage barns/barns of farms that purchase the hay.
Row Crop: Duties to include, but not limited to: Workers may drive and operate farm machinery to plant, cultivate, harvest and store grain crops such as corn, wheat, soybeans, etc. Attach farm implements such as plow, disc, and drill to tractor and drive tractor in field to till soil and plant / cultivate crop. Perform variety of other duties such as husking and shelling corn, lubricating and repairing farm machinery and unloading grain onto conveyors to storage bins and elevators. Operate or tend equipment used in agricultural production, such as tractors, combines, grain bin cleaning, and irrigation equipment. loading/unloading grain trucks, transfers grain through elevator grain system, clean out grain bins, elevator repair, unloads grain onto conveyors for storage in bins, operate machinery for cleaning of grain, cleaning grain bins, transferring grain from one bin to another clean bin, and maintenance on grain bins. Hauling crop in semi-truck from field locally no CDL needed. Assist in set-up of product for sale of crop.
Fruit/Vegetable Production: Duties to include, but not limited to: Workers may drive and operate farm machinery to plant, cultivate, harvest and store vegetables. Attach farm implements such as plow, disc, and drill to tractor and drive tractor in field to till soil and plant/cultivate crop. Perform variety of other duties such as lubricating and repairing farm machinery. May plan and schedule plowing, cultivating and harvesting operations. Plant, cultivate, harvest, & pack vegetables (boxes, buckets & crates). Lay plastic, setting plants, weeding (w/hoe & by hand), driving stakes, grading/sorting and activities associated with vegetable production. Assist in set-up of product for sale of crop.
Special Requirements
Physically able to bend, stoop, and able to stand on feet for long periods of time. Physically able to meet and perform all job specifications. May be required to take random drug and / or alcohol tests, at no cost to the worker. Testing positive or failure to comply may result in immediate termination from employment. All testing and background check will occur after employment has started and is not a part of the interview process. May be required to submit a criminal background check, at no cost to the worker. Felony convictions that employer reasonably believes, consistent with current law, will impair the safety and living conditions of other workers or other individuals on the farm will result in immediate termination. Failure to comply with request for criminal background check may result in immediate termination of employment.
