Job description
Workers will perform assigned duties as instructed by their supervisor. Clearing ground of rocks, sticks & roots by hand, clear brush and trees with chain saw. Manually weeding fields by hand or using hand tools. Minor repairs, maintain and clean all hand tools and mechanical equipment prior to and after use. May harvest sweet potatoes by hand with use of buckets. Must be able to sort, grade & pack potatoes by size quality or type. Workers will work in the packaging house, located on the farm. Load & unload boxes on trucks trailers or sweet potato harvesters. Use of mechanical digging equipment to dig potatoes. Workers will only use tractor to pull digger. Workers will be operating skid steers. Use wood to build and repair boxes for digger. Set up, operate, and repair irrigation systems. Drain water from fields with hand tools and shovel, when needed. Will also harvest the following: Purple Hull Peas, Beans, and Corn. Workers may clean and maintain the shop, potato sheds or any other buildings.
Workers who possess a valid driver’s license and meet all applicable legal requirements, including holding a doctor’s certificate as required by 29 CFR § 500.105 may be requested to operate employer-owned trucks or other multi-purpose vehicles to haul tools, supplies, crops, and transport workers (whether on or off farm) to and from the worker housing to the farm properties and occasionally around the farm properties during the workday including on public roads to reach the fields where work will be performed; and/or may transport workers to the grocery store, bank, or laundry facilities on an as needed basis. No applicants or workers will be rejected for not possessing a driver’s license or who may be unwilling to drive company vehicles. Such duties are completely optional and may be declined by the worker at his or her sole discretion. The Employer can and will make alternative arrangements for the transportation of workers should the need arise.
Safety Training: Safety training for use of farm equipment and tractors will be provided. The ability of an employee to safely operate machinery will be left to the discretion of management. To ensure the safety of all employees, those interested in operating machinery must be able to communicate with and adequately follow instructions given by management. Management reserves the right to restrict employees from operational duties who do not show proficiency to effectively communicate with management and may therefore place other employees' safety at risk.
Special Requirements
Three (3) months experience needed for mechanical diggers, sorting and grading sweet potatoes. There is a lifting requirement of 50-60 lbs. All tools, supplies, and equipment will be provided at no cost to workers. Workers should come prepared wearing appropriate clothing and footwear for the environmental and working conditions described. Cell phone can only be used during breaks, emergencies, and communicated with supervisor when needed. Workers must be able to climb, stand, sit, stoop, squat, kneel, crouch, bend (from the waist), push, pull, reach and lift. Work is performed in outdoor agricultural fields and involves exposure to sun, wind, rain, soil, mud, dust, heat, cold and other natural elements.
