Job description
Perform manual labor primarily to cut, bundle, and pack Beets, Kale, Cabbages, Napa cabbages, Zucchini, Hard squashes, Broccoli, Cilantro, Swiss chard, Cauliflower, and as a separate activity, load produce. Transplant, cultivate, harvest and pack Beets, Kale, Cabbages, Napa cabbages, Zucchini, Hard squashes, Broccoli, Cilantro, Swiss chard, Cauliflower. Use hand tools such as shovels, trowels, hoes, tampers, shears, and knives. Work in groups to harvest crops while being careful not to damage harvested product. Workers will be given an employee number in order to keep up with piece rates. Construct boxes. Pack and load harvested products on farm. Work within an assembly line to pack product. Determine maturity level of greens quickly and consistently by color, feel and size and apply correct defect tolerance, handling and harvest standards as instructed by supervisor. Duties may include tilling soil, weeding, thinning, counting, and checking crops. May repair fences and farm buildings or participate in irrigation activities. Set up and operate irrigation equipment. Clear and maintain irrigation ditches. Operate tractors, tractor drawn machinery, and self-propelled machinery to plow, harrow and fertilize soil or to plant, cultivate, spray and harvest crops. Repair and maintain farm vehicles, implements and mechanical equipment. Apply pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers to crops. Inform managers of crop progress and identify plants, pests, and weeds to determine the selection and application of pesticides and fertilizers. Record information about crops, pesticide use, yields or costs. Assist with Good Agricultural Practices policies.
Some workers may be offered a crew leader position overseeing and inspecting leafy greens and/or cruciferous vegetable operations. Perform manual labor to detect plant health and identify insect infestations, identify chemical residue and the quality of products. Interpret and enforce government acts and regulations and explain required standards to agricultural workers. Inspect agricultural commodities or related operations for compliance with laws and regulations governing health, quality, and safety. Verify that transportation and handling procedures meet regulatory requirements. Inspect the cleanliness and practices of establishment employees. Examine, weigh, and measure commodities to certify qualities, grades, and weights. Monitor the grading performed by company employees to verify conformance to standards. Report findings and recommendations and advise growers of corrective action to be taken. Direct or monitor the quarantine and treatment or destruction of plants or plant products. Provide consultative services in areas such as equipment or product evaluation, plant construction or layout, or food safety systems. Monitor workers to ensure that safety regulations are followed. Train workers in techniques such as planting, harvesting, weeding, or insect identification and in the use of safety measures. Coordinate dismantling, moving, and setting up equipment at new work sites. Schedule work crews, equipment, or transportation for several different work locations. Inspect
buildings, fences, fields or ranges, supplies, and equipment to determine work to be performed. Confer with managers to determine production requirements, conditions of equipment and supplies, and work schedules. Monitor operations to identify and solve problems, improve work methods, and ensure compliance with safety, company, and government regulations. Plan work schedules according to personnel and equipment availability. Assist with Good Agricultural Practices policies. Workers with a valid license and doctor's certificate may transport other workers and be offered additional hours.
Special Requirements
Three months of verifiable agricultural experience harvesting by cutting leafy greens and/or cruciferous vegetables.
