Job description
Mechanic work is secondary agricultural work as it is performed on a farm in conjunction with this farming operation. Mechanics perform work in fields with some work in the shop which is located near or adjacent to farm worksites identified in this application.
• Maintain, repair, and overhaul farm machinery, equipment and vehicles, such as tractors, trailers, trucks and harvesters.
• Dismantle defective machines for repair, using hand tools.
• Record details of repairs made and parts used.
• Reassemble machines and equipment following repair, testing operation and making adjustments, as necessary.
• Clean and lubricate parts.
• Test and replace electrical components and wiring, using test meters, soldering equipment, and hand tools.
• Tune or overhaul engines.
• Examine and listen to equipment, read inspection reports, and confer with customers to locate and diagnose malfunctions.
• Repair or replace defective parts, using hand tools, welding equipment, grinders, or saws.
• Fabricate new metal parts, using drill presses, engine lathes, and other machine tools.
• Repair bent or torn sheet metal.
• May transport farm equipment through farmland to shop where some repairs are performed.
Special Requirements
One month of ag mechanic experience. Specific requirements include lifting up to 50-55 pounds frequently and able to use hand tools, including cutting knives. Must be able to work under conditions where skin and clothing become heavily soiled with mud, water, grease, etc. Must be able to work outdoors in inclement weather conditions, including rain, cold, high winds, etc. Work involves frequent bending and working in bent or stooped positions. Must be able to walk and stand up extensively. No smoking, alcohol, firearms in the field or residential housing.
Work is performed in open fields and may involve exposure to mud, dust, wind, heat, cold, and other natural elements. Temperatures can range from 30 degrees Fahrenheit to over 100 degrees Fahrenheit during the period of employment. Workers should come prepared with appropriate clothing and footwear for the environmental and working conditions described.
