Job description

The General Ranch Hand position will be required to perform a variety of duties related to the production of cattle and hay. Duties related to the production of livestock will include the following: check physical characteristics, observe general condition of livestock and apply the appropriate care; examine animals to detect illness/injury/disease, rate of weight gain to determine delivery time, assist in delivery and night calving, apply or administer medications/vaccines, livestock care when cattle are not out on range; place mineral blocks; drive equipment to haul/distribute feed/water; load/unload trucks and semi-trucks; herd livestock - basic horsemanship required; confine livestock in stalls; clean/disinfect livestock corrals/stalls/sheds; dock, castrate, brand, clip/tag and clamp livestock; and maintain records on animals. General farm work will include making minor mechanical adjustments/repairs on farm machinery; operate farm equipment (tractor, swather, round baler, weed sprayer, fork lift, auger; side by side); mix chemical solutions (Roundup & Banvel) and spray/apply to crops; hoist/stack bales of hay onto wagon/truck; repair fencing and farm structures on an incidental basis to maintain integrity ; perform general cleanup of farm acreage; drive, load/unload trucks. Most duties are performed out of doors, and entail exposure to heat, cold, dust, rain and other environmental conditions common in fields. Worker must crouch, bend, lift and carry items weighing up to 100 pounds. Driving is required, must be able to obtain a Drivers' License. Sunday - worker may be requested to work on Sunday but not obligated to do so. Avg. 50 hours/week: 8am - 6pm (Mon-Fri); 8am -2pm (Sat). Nightshifts required during calving, and long/odd hours and split shifts required during harvest
Feb. - Basic mechanic work in preparation for planting and harvesting hay;
Mar. - May - Calving - includes night shifts;
June - July - Haying - includes long/odd hours and split shifts;
July - Nov - moving cattle and equipment and grounds maintenance.

Special Requirements

H-2A Adverse Compensation Adjustment -$1.80 -- Wage for H-2A workers provided housing is &16.68. Increased wage and/or bonus may be offered depending on experience and season.
