Job description
Worker will be required to perform a variety of duties found in SOC Code 45-2093 - Farmworkers, Farm, Ranch, and Aquacultural Animals
This position will require worker to perform a variety of duties related to the production of cattle and sheep. The season begins when cattle/sheep are moved to irrigated ground. During that time the worker will assist with all aspects related to feeding and watering livestock on irrigated pastures. The animals are moved to desert range in the late fall and are no longer being fed and watered every day. The season ends in December after the cattle are moved to winter range in the desert, and the pastures get the final irrigation and gates and fences are maintained for the year.
Duties include:
• Herd livestock to pastures for grazing or to scales, trucks, or other enclosures.
• Assist with Calving and night calving
• Assist with lambing and shearing of ranch flock
• Ride horse and or 4-wheeler to move cattle
• Examine animals to detect illness, injury, or disease, and to check physical characteristics, such as rate of weight gain.
• Mark livestock to identify ownership and grade, using brands, tags, paint, or tattoos.
• Drive trucks, tractors, and other equipment
• Move equipment and/or livestock from one location to another,
• Worker will assist with associated tasks such as:
• Maintain and fix fence as necessary to maintain integrity of the pastures/fields.
• Set up electric and barbed wire fencing as needed.
• Assist with irrigating, and servicing equipment.
• Loading and unloading bales.
• Assist with shipping at the end of the season
• Drive tractors and backhoe
• Unload and move feed.
Instruction and general supervision will be provided by the farm manager or a designated employee. However, the worker must perform duties without close supervision and listen to, understand and follow simple instructions of the employer or supervisor. All tools, supplies and equipment required to perform the duties assigned will be provided at no charge to the worker. The job entails working with farm animals and machinery, outdoors in all types of weather (extreme heat, wind and cold) and occasional exposure to herding hazards such as cattle stampedes, kicking/bucking horses, mosquitos, poisonous snakes and predators. Worker must crouch, bend, lift and carry items weighing up to 100 pounds while performing required activities.
Special Requirements
Employer may choose to pay experienced workers, regardless of origin, more than the published minimum wage rate. Worker may be offered additional hours depending on the work load. Start and finish times will vary based on duties. Work may be offered work on Sunday, but will not be required.
