Job description
General farm worker needed for soybean, sugarcane, cattle, hay, pasture and ryegrass farming. Work includes operating of farm equipment, vehicles, operating of tractors, tractor drawn machinery and self-propelled machinery used to plow, till, harrow, apply fertilizer, herbicides and pesticides to crops; plant, cultivate, fertilize, harvest, irrigate of crops by hand or machine. Cut sugarcane with machetes into segments, load wagons with sugarcane stalks. May work in groups to hand plant sugarcane in furrows while walking/following moving wagon. Workers must reach and pull to remove precut stalks from trailer, while bending and/or stooping, place, straighten and plant sugarcane pieces. Pickup dropped sugarcane in fields. Work also includes field prep, plant, water maintenance, cleaning drains with shovel, walk fields, check for standing water, manually plant, cultivate and harvest as required. Field prep includes manual shovel work and hoeing of weeds, spot spray, transplant, and general farm labor. Help with or/operate, repair and maintain barns, buildings, cattle, change oil, filters and gas, corrals, equip (all farm, mechanical and vehicle), farm, fences, fields, headlands/grounds, irrigation, levees, ponds, properties, roads, shed, and shop, water lines/pumps/tanks /troughs and vehicles. Use of hand tools such as machetes, hoes, knives, shovels, tampers, and trowels. Clean and load harvested crops and supplies, unload as needed, haul to bins, dryer or mill as needed. In Sep once cane harvest begins work schedule may be adjusted, as assigned by the mill, beginning as early as 2 AM. Worker may plant, cut, fluff, harvest, and bail hay, disburse hay to cattle, driving tractors and equip, herding, seasonal calving, sorting calves, castrating, clean stalls, count heads, branding, ear marking, horn tipping, vaccinating, feeding/water, assist with gates and at stalls Spray cattle with approved insecticides, weed control, predator control and check/maintain of livestock. May clear brush with hand tools, machinery, service/repair all equipment, check, there is a heavy workload during seasonal calving and hay season. Workers must assist in working during drought or other excessive weather conditions. All aspects of position offered must be done in a manner to ensure the safety of the workers/coworkers and livestock. Must have basic working ability with fence tools and common farm
and ranch implements. Must be reliable and able to perform assigned tasks capably and efficiently. Workers must be able and willing to work alone or in small groups in isolated areas for extended periods. Worker must be able to lift/carry 50 lbs. M-F, some Sat/Sun, work in excess of 40 hours may vary. Employees may be compensated above the stated hourly wage, this decision to pay above the prevailing hourly wage will be made by the employer, basing this decision on factors that include the individual recipient's performance and work history. Allergies to ragweed, goldenrod, insects/insecticides and related chemicals, fungicides, and pesticides, etc. may affect workers’ ability to perform the job. Employer may require post hire, random, upon suspicion or post-accident drug testing, all at no cost to employee. Testing positive or failure to comply may result in immediate termination from employment. Job involves stooping, lifting, and working outside in inclement weather. Must have 3 months exp in similar position.
