Job description
We are seeking dedicated and hardworking individuals for our Sweet Potato and Cotton planting/harvesting season. This is a seasonal job and if hired, you are expected to complete the full contract period. Planting Sweet Potatoes, Cotton, & Corn –Covering potatoes with use of bedding machine. Cover, punch holes, and remove plastic and paper from plant beds. Cut slips by hand with a knife, place in boxes to load & unload onto trucks. Walk behind potato transplanter and fill in slips by hand. Riding mechanical transplanter and loading slips in planting cups. Divining plants by hand. Cotton: Thin out young cotton. May be asked to help move loader equipment. Miscellaneous: May be asked to operate vehicles, farm equipment, tractors (in the field) while using implements such as hipper, disk, dual, chisel plow, bush hog, skid steer, forklift, water tailer, and any other equipment related to planting and cultivating crops. Will check and maintain proper fluid levels on equipment and report needed maintenance to supervisor. Some jobs will also involve field work such as clearing ground of rocks, sticks, & roots by hand, clearing brush and trees with chain saws, manually weeding fields, draining water from fields, participate in irrigation activities, and general field, fence, barns & potato shed maintenance, minor repairs & cleaning of hand tools and mechanical equipment prior to and after use. Preparing ground for planting. Move hay. May use wood to build and repair boxes for potatoes/vegetables. Set up and operate irrigations systems. Load & unload boxes on truck’s trailer. Wash and clean farm buildings and equipment. Workers with valid driver’s license may be asked to transport workers to/from grocery store each week and to/from worksite to housing each day.
Special Requirements
Applicants must be 18 years or older. The employer may conduct a criminal background check. Three (3) months experience needed in hand cutting slips and use of mechanical transplanter. It is recommended that you have experience with Agricultural Equipment and knowledge of Agricultural Field work due to safety reasons related to possible equipment injury, heat stroke possibility, and food safety. A valid driver's license is required to transport workers to field and grocery stores. Workers should come prepared wearing appropriate clothing and footwear for the environmental and working conditions described. Cell phones can only be used during breaks, emergencies, and communicated with supervisor when needed. Lifting requirement many have a range of 5 to 60 lbs. All tools, supplies and equipment will be provided at no cost to the workers. Must be able to work with minimum supervision.
