Job description
Workers will be required to perform all duties necessary to plant, grow and harvest a large variety of vegetables and some small fruit. Workers will work with irrigation systems, cultivate soil, and harvest all crops. Pre-harvest activities include staking, tying, pruning, weeding, hoeing, and any miscellaneous duties required to plant, care and promote growth of produce. Workers will pick vegetables according to size and maturity. Harvested produce is placed in field bins. Workers will load these containers onto trucks or trailers for transport from fields. Any rotted, unacceptable debris must be discarded before placing in bins. Extreme care not to bruise or damage produce must be taken at all times. Produce will be packed and prepared for market as instructed by supervisor. Trucks must be loaded / unloaded with supplies and produce weighing approximately 50 lbs. Will also perform misc farm duties such as harvest and bale hay, rake straw, cutting / baling sod, clear/repair fence rows, clean up farm buildings, and dig ditches. Work sites and equipment must be cleaned daily.
Special Requirements
Workers must be able to work outdoors in all types of weather. Must be able to repeatedly lift and carry 50 pounds; crouch, squat and bend for long periods of time. A designated farm crew leader or supervisor will provide instructions and general supervision. Technical horticultural activities will be closely supervised; however, workers will be expected to perform their general duties as quickly and efficiently as possible without close supervision.
During busy planting/harvest season workers may be requested to start earlier and work more than the scheduled 40 hours per week, including holidays. When weather is hot, starting and quitting times may be shifted to earlier or later in the day. This may vary depending on crop and weather conditions.
