Job description
Following supervisor's instructions workers will shovel, haul, spread manure, and dig holes, ditches, and trenches. Manually plant, cultivate, and harvest vegetables, produce, horticultural specialties and field crops (green beans, green peppers, jalapenos, onions, blueberries, muskmelon, watermelon, potatoes, peaches, cucumbers, tomatoes, etc.). Use hand tools such as shovels, trowels, hoes, tampers, pruning hooks, shears, and knives. Duties may include tilling soil, applying fertilizers, mowing, transplanting, weeding, thinning, or pruning crops, and cleaning, grading, packing, and loading harvested product. May repair fences and farm buildings and participate in irrigation activities. Workers will operate equipment. Workers will operate vehicles, tractors, lawn mowers, and hi boy tractor. Care, feeding, and watering of animals. Workers will also work on farm packing control. Fence repair and building exterior and maintenance. Pumpkins - workers must perform manual labor to hand cut and pack pumpkins. Pumpkins must be handled carefully to avoid cuts and bruises to fruit. Workers must cut and pack pumpkins. Never carry the fruit by their stems. Duties also include cleaning, loading, and unloading harvested products. Grade and sort products according to factors such as color, appearance, feel, and quality to ensure correct processing and usage. Clean and maintain work areas. Apples - The worker will place a picking sack over their shoulder and carry an 18' to 22' ladder from the field truck to the area of the grove to be harvested. A fully loaded sack weighs between approximately 80 and 100 lbs., depending upon the size, condition, and variety of fruit. Worker positions ladder against the tree and within reach of the fruit in a leaning position, taking care not to break limbs, damage the tree, knock off fruit, or interfere with other workers, in a secure position to prevent slipping or falling and possible injury to themselves or other workers. Worker will remove fruit from the tree and place into pick sack. Apple production includes, picking and washing apples, putting skewers in apples, and then putting them in plastic bubble and applying labels. Sweet Corn - Test each ear for ripeness. Juice from the kernels should be milky white and the kernels should be soft. The silk on the ears should have turned dark brown. The ears should be firm. Kernels on the tips of the unhusked ears should be plump and milky. Grasp the ear firmly and pull down, then twist and pull. Pull up the corn stalks immediately after harvest. Cut the stalks into 1-foot lengths before adding them to the compost pile to hasten their decay.
Special Requirements
Workers must be 18 years or older. Four (4) months experience in grading, sorting, and loading harvested products and use of mechanical harvesting, cultivating, and planting equipment. Four (4) months experience required in cutting fruit off the vine. Workers should expect periods of little/no work because of the weather/crop/or other conditions beyond the employer's control. Hours and days of work may be very due to weather conditions. Cell phone can only be used during breaks, emergencies and communicated with supervisors when needed. Workers should come prepared wearing appropriate clothing and footwear for the environmental and working conditions described. Workers will be exposed to extreme temperatures. Workers must be able to do extensive pushing, pulling, sitting, and walking. This job requires frequent stooping and bending over, reaching, repetitive movements, and a lifting requirement of up to 60 lbs.
