Job description
Harvesting tobacco- topping- removing the flower blooms from top few inches of the plants. chopping- using garden hoe to remove weeds/grass between plants and inside of rows, that plowing didn't remove. cutting- using tobacco knife to cut down plants at bottom of stalk and putting into a pile of 6-8 plants, depending on the size, and coming back to place the plants onto a wooden stick with a tobacco spike and standing in the ground. After couple of days of drying out, the sticks will be loaded onto a trailer/wagon and haul to the barn, where the workers will hang the sticks in large tobacco barns to dry out. Stripping- taking down the sticks of dried out tobacco from the barns and removing the leaves and sorting them into 3 piles (based on looks and color), then bundling the leaves into large bags and tagging them with a number. Baling - placing the leaves into large baling machines that compress the leaves into square bales weighing approximately 600 lbs to be taken to warehouse to sell. Workers will do odd jobs, during the down times of the tobacco process, like mowing, weed eating, cleaning equipment, repairing livestock fences or any other type of farm jobs, this will help to maintain the workers guaranteed 3/4 hours
Special Requirements
Workers will be trained by employer before each phase of the tobacco process, so that they are familiar with equipment, that is provided, and that they understand each process.
