Job description

Maintain quiet calm demeanor working around cattle in close quarters (cattle pens and facilities). Unload, inspect calves for overall health and physical condition, weigh and sort into holding pens for processing based on treatment needs, size, and type. Deworm, vaccinate, ear tag, castrate and dehorn. Identify sick high-risk calves, sort and move to the hospital pen. Feed and water calves. Position feed bunks and water troughs for easy access to calves. Ensure that calves have access to fresh, clean water at all times. Mix feed. For 40 -50 days feed calves free-choice feed that includes wet corn gluten, corn and cottonseed hulls. Move calves to “grow yards”. Calves are forage-fed native grasses or cheap feed for about 150 days. Observe cattle closely for signs of distress, illness, or injury. Care for livestock using animal husbandry practices that impact the well-being of cattle and animal health. Load sellable size (700 -800 lbs.) cattle for transport to buyer.
Inspect and repair fences, ranch buildings, receiving areas, loading docks etc. Keep all areas clean and free of debris. Perform general farm labor jobs: maintenance on farm equipment (clean, oil, repair); repair and clean ranch buildings (sheds, barns, etc.); mow areas around buildings and keep clean and free from debris; control grass and weeds. Drive tractors and four wheelers, load and unload pallets with tractor.

Special Requirements

Able to perform all job duties. Drive tractor/farm truck. Operate weed eaters, mowers, posthole diggers, power tools. Use shovels, hoes, pitch forks. Drug testing conducted at employer expense in case of accident or if employer feels it is necessary to ensure safety in the workplace. Able to lift 50 lbs. 4f Work is performed outdoors and involves exposure to sun, rain, heat, cold, insects and other natural elements. Perform physically demanding job duties. Understand cattle behavior concepts and sensory characteristics for safe and low-stress handling. Hours of work may vary due to weather conditions etc. Must be available for entire contract period. Applicants meeting all qualifications required must possess documents to complete I-9 and be available at time and place necessary to begin employment. Drug testing can be conducted at Ted Parker Cattle's expense if at any time employer feels it is necessary to ensure safety in the workplace.
