Job description
The job specifications involve skilled farm labor for the purpose of performing seasonal duties associated with potato storage.
Preparing the potato storage facility begins prior to harvest each year.
Preparation duties will include, washing equipment, moving equipment, sterilizing the warehouse, performing minor construction repairs.
Potato storage will begin with the start of potato harvest in early September. Shipping of storage operations and loading potatoes out of storage occurs upon the completion of harvest, usually from late October/early November until all potatoes have been shipped out, around the middle of May each year. Storage operations are not a year-round activity. Potatoes remain in their natural state while being stored and are not being processed during storage.
Performs basic equipment service/maintenance tasks on farm equipment used in storage operations
Operate potato storage equipment, including pilers, forklifts, bobcat, storage and washline equipment
Use equipment to load and unload potatoes from storage bins
Operate equipment to move potatoes from storage bins to load out location
Use equipment to load potatoes on to trucks
Handle potatoes in a manner to ensure they are not damaged
Removal and clean up of spilled potatoes and other debris
Operate a farm truck as necessary to haul crops from growing location to farm shed.
Operating a farm provided work pickup or service vehicle in order to drive to the field/farming location or to pickup/deliver parts to
the farming operation.
Perform basic maintenance or repairs on farm facilities
Comply with all safety policies, practices, and procedures
Perform farm site cleaning
Report equipment repair needs to a supervisor
Notify supervisor of potato quality concerns
Perform general farm work as needed
Participate in required health and safety training
All tools will be provided at no cost
Special Requirements
3 months experience within the last 2 years working with potatoes is required. Experience operating a front end loader & forklift is required. Applicants should have a drivers license (standard Class C), or ability to obtain one upon hire. Repetitive movements, extensive pushing, and pulling, extensive walking, standing, bending and stooping will be required. Work may be required outdoors when temperatures can vary from very hot to very cold, and potentially wet, or dry/dusty conditions. Hours of work will be offered above 40 hours per week, but is on a voluntary basis and is not guaranteed. Work schedules may fluctuate relative to weather conditions, field conditions, and seed availability. Work may be offered on weekends and holidays, but is not required. Work hours may fluctuate due to production schedules. Employees must be able to perform the duties and meet the physical requirements of the job for the duration of the contract.
