A Structural Steel Fabricator specializes in the cutting, forming, assembly, and welding of carbon steel components used in marine and structural applications. (Job Duties)
In carbon steel boat fabrication, the fabricator produces hulls, decks, frames, bulkheads, stiffeners, and supporting structures in accordance with engineering drawings, marine standards, and classification requirements. Work is performed with a strong focus on dimensional accuracy, structural integrity, corrosion resistance, and weld quality suitable for marine environments. (Type of Structures)The fabricator interprets fabrication drawings, prepares materials, performs fit-up and welding operations, and ensures all components meet project specifications and applicable codes such as AWS, ABS, or USCG standards. Quality control, safety compliance, and coordination with naval architects, engineers, and inspectors are integral parts of the fabrication process. (Welding Tasks)

The type of equipment the workers will be using is:
Cutting Equipment
Oxy-fuel cutting torches
Band saws and cold saws
Hand-held plasma cutters and grinders
Forming and Shaping Equipment
Press brakes
Hydraulic presses
Plate bending and forming tools
Welding Equipment
MIG (GMAW) welding machines
Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW) machines
Stick welding (SMAW) machines
Submerged Arc Welding (SAW) systems (for heavy sections)
Material Handling and Assembly
Overhead cranes and jib cranes
Chain hoists and rigging equipment
Welding positioners
Measuring and Inspection Tools
Steel tapes, squares, and levels
Welding gauges

Materials Used in Carbon Steel Boat Fabrication:
Carbon Steel Plates
Marine-grade carbon steel plates (various thicknesses)
Structural carbon steel sheets
Structural Shapes
Flat bars
Angles
Channels
Bulb flats and T-sections
Pipes and Tubes
Carbon steel pipes for structural and system supports
Welding Consumables
Carbon steel welding wires and electrodes
Fluxes for FCAW and SAW processes
Surface Preparation and Protection Abrasives for blasting and grinding
Primers and marine-grade coatings
Corrosion protection materials

***Original F.a.2***
Fabricate, align, assemble, and weld metal components to create safe, precise, and durable structures according to blueprints and technical specifications. May involve reading and interpreting blueprints or analyzing engineering drawings and technical schematics to determine materials, dimensions, and assembly sequences. May involve shaping, cutting, bending, and grinding metal using tools such as shears, torches, plasma cutters, grinders, and presses. Fitting fabricated parts by positioning, and aligning using jigs, clamps, braces and hoists to form or complete structures. Welding, soldering, or riveting components to ensure structural integrity and compliance with specifications.

Special Requirements

3 months experience required in Structural Metal Fabrication and Fitters. Employer does not provide training for these positions. Applicants must have knowledge on operating some or any of the listed equipment and machinery mentioned in our job order and must be able to perform structural welds and metal cutting.
