Job description
An Oyster Boat Deckhand works on commercial fishing boats harvesting oysters in the Texas coastal bays. The job involves boarding the vessel early each morning, traveling through the bays, and using dredges, nets, traps, and other harvesting equipment to locate and collect oysters for human consumption. Workers sort and clean harvested oysters, return undersized or unwanted oysters to the water, place oysters into sacks, tag and store harvested oysters, unload oyster sacks at the dock, and clean the vessel and work areas after each trip.
The position requires physical strength, the ability to lift more than 50 pounds, teamwork, and the ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Special Requirements
Ability to lift 50+ pounds, perform physically demanding work, work outdoors in varying weather conditions, follow safety procedures, and work effectively as part of a crew. No specific certification, or formal training is required for this position.
