Job description

Perform manual labor to plant, cultivate, prune, thin, and harvest container and field grown ornamental and flowering trees, shrubs, plants, bedding plants, ornamental grasses, vegetables, fruits and crops including peaches, blueberries, apples, figs, strawberries, watermelons, onions and blackberries by hand and machine. Haul, clean, pack and load harvested product. Plant, spray, fertilize, transplant, string, cultivate, weed, thin, and prune plants and crops. Use hand tools and gardening tools such as shovels, trowels, hoes, tampers, pruning hooks, shears and knives. Haul and spread topsoil, fertilizer, peat moss, and other materials to condition soil using wheelbarrows or carts and shovels. Dig, cut, and transplant seedlings, cuttings, trees and shrubs. Harvest, transplant, pot, and label plants. Feel plants leaves and note their coloring to detect the presence of insects or disease. Move containerized shrubs, plants, and trees using wheelbarrows or tractors. Inspect plants and bud ties to assess quality. Workers will walk orchard carrying ladder from tree to tree to thin and prune. Workers will be assigned rows of trees and must prune and thin each tree as shown by the field supervisor. Limbs must not be torn from the tree, nor should limbs be completely stripped of leaves. Harvest fruits and vegetables by hand. Workers will grade and harvest fruit as fruit truck drives down rows. Workers will pot, space, label and tag plants within an assembly line. Construct trellises, repair fences and farm or nursery buildings. Orchard maintenance and farm, field, orchard, nursery and shed sanitation duties. Operate tractors and other machinery and equipment to plow, plant, harrow, fertilize, cultivate, harvest and spray fields. Clean work areas and maintain grounds and landscaping. Participate in irrigation activities: set up and operate irrigation equipment, clear and maintain irrigation ditches, and maintain and repair irrigation and climate control systems. Repair and maintain farm vehicles, implements, and mechanical equipment. Inform farmers or farm managers of crop progress. Record information about crops, such as pesticide use, yields, or costs. Workers with a valid license and doctors certificate may transport other workers in vehicles provided and insured by the employer and be offered additional hours. Assist with Good Agricultural Practices policies.

Allergies to ragweed, goldenrod, honey bees, insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, or related chemicals may affect a workers ability to perform the job. Persons seeking employment in this position must be available for the entire period requested by the employer. All workers will be subject to a two day introductory period during which the employer will evaluate workers' performance of required tasks. Employer reserves the right to terminate a worker if the employer reasonably finds worker's performance during the introductory period to be unacceptable. Employer reserves the right to discharge an obviously unqualified worker, malingerer or recalcitrant worker who is physically able but is unwilling to perform the work necessary for the employer to grow a premium quality product, or for any other lawful reason.

Employer may request, but not require, workers to work more than the stated daily hours and/or on a workers Sabbath or federal holidays. Worker must report to work at designated time and place each day. Daily or weekly work schedule may vary due to weather, sunlight, temperature, crop conditions, and other factors. Employer will notify workers of any change to start time.

Workers should expect occasional periods of little or no work because of weather, crop or other conditions beyond the employer's control. These periods can occur anytime throughout the season. Workers may be assigned a variety of duties in any given day and different tasks on different days.

Special Requirements

One month of nursery work experience required. Perform prolonged bending, reaching and heavy lifting. Must lift and carry up to 50 lbs and use a 6' ladder. Work outdoors in adverse weather conditions. Employer is a drug free workplace. Drug testing is conducted post hire at the employer's expense and is not part of the interview process. Negative results are required before starting work.
