Job description

Corn Detasseling: Workers will perform assigned duties as instructed by their supervisor. The worker will walk down the aisles between the plants in the corn fields, for the purpose of detasseling seed corn, remove rogue plants, weeds and volunteer corn plants from seed corn production fields. The worker in order to perform this kind of work must be able to work outside for at least 6 hours a day in all kinds of weather and be in possession of the requisite strength and endurance, working quickly and skillfully with their hands. Based upon work performance, advancement is a possibility. This advancement includes but is not limited to supervising/managing a crew as well as possibly driving a bus as long as licensing requirements are met. The employer will provide the tools necessary (if applicable) to perform the job described without charge to the worker. The employer will charge the worker for reasonable costs related to the workers refusal or negligent failure to return the tools or due to such workers willful damage or destruction of the tools.

Special Requirements

Please note that if the worker is paid a piece rate for any of these activities, the worker will be guaranteed the pay rate that is the highest of the AEWR, the prevailing hourly wage or piece rate, the agreed-upon collective bargaining wage, or the Federal or State minimum wage, except where a special procedure is approved for an occupation or specific class of agricultural employment.

Most of the jobs associated with this employment are paid by the piece rate, however, $15.31 per hour or a higher or lower prevailing wage rate, if applicable, is guaranteed as a minimum for all hours worked during a pay period. If the workers total pay for the pay period from piece-rate earnings and hourly wages divided by his total hours worked during that pay period results in average hourly earnings of less than the guaranteed hourly rate, the worker will be provided build-up pay to the guaranteed minimum hourly rate.
