Job description

GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the field supervisor, workers will perform duties such as hand harvest, machine harvest, load totes, build totes, drive equipment, field QC, weed abatement in between crops such as spring mix and spinach commodities.
Land Clearing: This involves removing unwanted vegetation, underbrush, roots, stumps, and trees as well as removing rocks and other obstructions from the soil. They will install wind breaks, dig ditches, and operate farm equipment. Workers will use several hand tools such as shovels, axes, chainsaws, pick axes, hoes, etc. to clear the obstructions.
Workers may also be involved of burning trees, stumps, roots, etc once they are removed.
Farm equipment may consist of tractors, backhoes, and bulldozers. Only properly trained works will be permitted to operate farm equipment. Workers must take great care to ensure the safety of other workers, other equipment, themselves, trees, and the land. Workers must follow employers instructions to ensure safety procedures are followed.
Once the land is cleared workers may spray fertilizers and other organic matter, and run field rows. Workers may also install irrigation systems.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
A. Hand Harvest Employee will engage in harvesting by hand or with use of hand tools for soil grown crops (Mature Kale, Romaine). This does not include any type of harvest done by machine or any other type of mechanical device. Hand harvest consists of manually fathering or severing the crop from the soil, Stems or roots, at its growing position in the fields. Employees will be required to bunch and tie product in some manner or place loosely in a bins, cartons, or other packaging.
B. Machine Harvest Employee will engage in harvesting by machine. This includes any type of harvest done by machine or any other type of mechanical device. When harvesting by machine, the duties could include filling totes, bins or cartons, load totes, bins, or cartons by stacking on top of each other and building boxes in field or inside a packing facility.
C. Equipment and driving activities Workers may be required to operate tractors, forklifts, trucks, vans, and other farm equipment during field operations as an incidental activity. Before any worker is required to operate any farm equipment, the worker will be instructed in the proper and safe operation of tractor. Workers will be required to operate tractors according to instructions and in a manner, that protects the operator, other workers, trees, crops, and equipment. Repeated failure to obey operating and safety instructions may result in termination. Properly licensed workers may be requested to transport workers.
D. Crop Weeding- Employee will engage in the removal of unwanted weeds not sown and not desired in between leafy green commodities, mature kales and Romaine as needed. Hand weeding fields will be a significant portion of the work required. Workers will be required to remove weeds by hand. Workers will bend and stoop to pick weeds. Workers are required to work in fields when plants are wet with dew or rain. Temperatures in the fields during the working hours can range from thirty-five (35 F) to over ninety-five (95 F) degrees.
E. Employees will be required to perform duties such as cleaning up the fields they are working in by, picking up trash, discarding of unwanted packing items such as boxes, packs, or ties. Employees will be required to walk in front of machines weeding or discarding of unwanted items in the field, and/or moving pipe. Employees may be required to spread product in and around packing facility.
F. Employees will be required to abide by all people safety and food safety regulations and will be required to participate in ongoing safety trainings.

Special Requirements

Must have three months experience harvesting crops on commercial farm. Must be at least 18 years old, and legally authorized to work in the US. Must be physically able to meet and perform all job specifications stated in job order. Must be able to work in the hot humid weather for extended periods of time. Workers are subject to random drug testing at no cost to the employee. All drug testing will occur after the worker begins his or her employment and is not a part of the interview process. Failing or refusing a drug test will result in immediate termination.
