Job description

Workers at Hacienda La Balear will plant and harvest coffee. The majority of the workdays are spent outdoors and on ones feet. Workers are rarely in one place for an extended period of time. It is estimated that 75% of the time is spent landscaping and maintaining the farm while the other 25% is spent harvesting the product. Workers must be able to stand, walk up and down the hills, sit, sloop, squat, kneel, crouch, bend (from the waist), push, pull, reach, lift, and carry items weighing between 5-60 pounds. Workers are required to hand pick ripe coffee beans one by one with a basket around the waist with a minimum rate of 35 pounds per hour; 7 hours per day is normal. The workers may be requested, but not required, to work 12 hours per day and/or be available on federal holidays, depending on the conditions of the fields, weather, and maturity of the crop. The manager or supervisor will notify workers at the end of the workday of any changes in the start time and anticipated hours of work for the following days. Regular attendance by all workers during schedule hours of the workday and/or work period is expected. Unsatisfactory attendance, including reporting late or excessive requests to leave before the end of the workday may be cause for disciplinary action. Workers must call their manager or supervisor as far in advance as possible prior to start of the workday if they do not expect to be on time. Further information on the employers attendance policy can be found in the employee handbook.

Special Requirements

All work performed in outdoor agricultural fields involves exposure to sun, soil, mud, dust, heat, cold and other natural elements. Workers must be able to withstand working in the direct sunlight and conditions ranging from hot and humid weather, moderate rain and cold while performing their required job duties. Workers should come prepared wearing appropriate clothing and footwear for the environmental and working conditions described. Plant, fertilize, remove weed, maintain and peek coffee. Work entails exposure to soil, plants, insects, and plant materials such as, but not limited to pesticides and fertilizers. All pesticides and fertilizers will be applied by capable and certified workers according to OSHA standards.
