Job description
We are a cattle and grain farm. Our cattle side consists of 600 cow/calf pairs that are raised in a pasture setting. We have 2,500 cattle in the feedlot that we finish for market. Our grain side of the operation has 1,500 acres of corn that we harvest mostly for feed. The job we are hiring for is a cow/calf assistant. Job duties will include assisting in calving in the spring, starting in mid-February, which lasts until the end of May. These calving duties include monitoring cattle for calving difficulties and health problems. As well as feeding, bedding, and cleaning the pens of the cattle. Cows are confined during this period and brought in from pastures for calving. While they are confined intensive care and manual feeding is needed. At the end of calving, the cow/calf pairs are moved to pasture, where the employee will check the cattle.
Job duties through the summer will include checking health/welfare of the cattle. Maintaining perimeter fence to keep livestock in and predators out. Checking water levels and providing mineral for the cattle. Administering veterinary care as needed, including administering vaccinations. Additionally weed control to maximize feed value. In the fall, the employee will assist with preconditioning calves and cows. Sorting the calves to be sold, and the cows to be loaded to go to another site for winter care. Additional time would be spent harvesting bedding and feed supply for the next spring when the cows return to calve again.
