Job description

Worker will apply specific techniques as instructed by the employer to perform tasks associated with the indoor and outdoor production of ornamental and nursery stock such as, trees, shrubs, bedding plants, plugs, liners, hanging baskets, greenhouse-grown specialty plants, and other horticultural varieties.
Duties related to general farm/nursery work may include the following responsibilities: maintain, drive, attach and operate farm implements/tractors/equipment to till soil, plant, cultivate, fertilize, and harvest crops; make minor mechanical adjustments and repairs on farm machinery; remove undesirable and excess growth from crops or farm grounds; lift, carry, and load/unload products or supplies; prepare fields, seed beds, containers, plastic growing beds, etc.; load/unload trucks and product from conveyor belt; attach hangers to baskets and hang throughout holding houses; install/remove plastic coverings; shear trees; tie/position trees and plants by tying or wrapping as necessary; count, inventory, and grade trees; drag cut trees from cutting area; pack, label, tag, pull, sort, and store plants by variety; hand plant trees, vines, and/or plants in fields, orchards and/or containers; use tools to dig holes to plant young trees; sow seed and plant cuttings; mix planting soil; propagate plants; walk behind equipment to ensure plant placement (unclog planter if necessary); plant transplants with machine or by hand; observe general condition and inspect crops/plants/trees for signs of disease/insect manifestations/worms/rot and apply appropriate care; remove dead plants and replace with seeds or live plants; use mechanized or hand tools such as shovels, trowels, hoes, tampers, pruning tools, shears, knives, saws, ladders, etc.; mix/spray/apply chemicals such as herbicides, fungicides, pesticides, fertilizers, plant growth chemicals, and other plant related treatments (according to appropriate restrictive use laws, when/if applicable) by hand or machine; haul/spread soil or products to condition land; fill growing tanks with water; dig/rake and screen soil and fill cold frames/hot beds; move containerized plants/vines/trees; dig/wrap roots of plants/vines/trees; pick up/handle/climb ladders; lift items such as rolls of plastic, bundles of wire, and rolls of drip tape overhead; remove strings/wire from trellises or other structures; clear property; cut down trees; identify and remove product that is misshapen, damaged, or inferior; pollinate/prune/transplant/pinch plants/vines/trees and cull appropriately to ensure development of product; prune/thin plants/vines/trees using a variety of hand and/or mechanized pruning equipment; identify and remove stubs or broken branches, downward-growing branches, branches which rub against each other, shaded interior branches, dead wood and shoots/suckers; remove bud and/or identifiable fruit from within a cluster of other fruits; train trees/vines to trellis, including clipping and tying limbs and shoots to wire; stake and tie plants/trees; train, position, prop, and tie tree limbs; paint tree trunks; mow/tend farm areas; replace/repair fencing; paint/repair/maintain farm structures/grounds; perform general clean-up of farm areas and worksites; clean fields after harvest; collect fallen debris/product into piles using rake; remove ladders, debris, boxes, and discarded product from growing areas; dig with a shovel or machine; shape root balls with a shovel; tie plants up before digging; pre-wrap burlaps on plants; fill containers with potting material; lift plants onto pallets; fill and label trays, and move product to/from greenhouses and loading/unloading areas; prepare plants/vines/trees to fill orders; prepare for harvesting of crop including spreading liners in bins and rolling bins into blocks by hand; even out rows for harvest; carry and position work aids such as ladders, canvas drop-cloths, buckets, harnesses, and bags;

Special Requirements

Applicants must have 3 months experience with outdoor farm/agricultural work.
