Job description
Worker will be required to perform a variety of duties related to the production of garlic, hazelnut, grass seed, wheat, clover, nursery stock, and hemp. The majority of the work activities during the overall contract period, however, will be related to general farm work/irrigation/crop production.
General Farm Work will include the following responsibilities:
maintain, drive, attach and operate farm implements/tractors/equipment to till soil, plant, cultivate, fertilize, and harvest crops; make minor mechanical adjustments and repairs on farm machinery; may mix and/or spray chemicals (according to appropriate restrictive use laws, when/if applicable); drive, load/unload trucks; operate vehicle, motor bike or all-terrain vehicle in the course of performing duties; prepare fields; plant, spray, weed, and irrigate crops/plants/trees; sow seed and plant cuttings; mix planting soil; propagate plants; plant trees/vines/plants in containers; walk behind equipment to ensure plant placement; plant transplants with machine or by hand; observe general condition and inspect crops/plants/trees for signs of disease/insect manifestations/worms/rot and apply appropriate care; remove dead plants and replace with seeds or live plants; read/interpret meters used to regulate/control environmental conditions; maintain/repair hydroponic/environmental control systems; pollinate/prune/transplant/pinch plants/trees and cull appropriately to ensure development of product; use tools to dig holes to plant young hazelnut trees; care for trees during growing process including weeding, hoeing, trunk painting, and hand fertilizing; prune trees using a variety of pruning equipment including pruning knife, hand shears, hand loppers, hand saws, and 12-foot ladders; prune and thin from the ground or a ladder up to 12 feet in height or from a motorized platform; hand thin trees to ensure proper load on tree; identify and remove stubs or broken branches, downward-growing branches, branches which rub against each other, shaded interior branches, dead wood and shoots/suckers with hand pruning saws and clippers and mechanized equipment; snip stems; stake and tie plants/trees; train trees to trellis, including clipping and tying limbs and shoots to wire; train and position tree limbs; collect fallen nuts into piles using rake; rake hazelnuts away from trees toward center of the rows for harvest; dig/wrap roots of plants/vines/trees; dig with a shovel or machine; shape root balls with a shovel; tie plants up before digging; pre-wrap burlaps on plants; kneel to pin burlap on root ball; crimp wire baskets on root balls; put ball and burlap dug plants into containers and fill containers with potting material; lift plants onto pallets; move containerized plants/vines/trees; prepare flowers/plants/shrubs/trees to fill orders; pickup and move bins/pallets with forklift; perform general clean-up of farm areas; remove ladders, rocks, debris, boxes, and discarded fruit/nuts from fields and orchards to clean growing areas; clear and burn roots and brush; discard diseased/rotting/inferior product and foreign matter; remove weeds with hoe, shovel, or by hand; clear property; clean fields after harvest; handle and lift items above the head such as rolls of plastic, bundles of wire, and rolls of drip tape; remove rocks from rows in front of harvesting equipment; alert equipment operator of equipment clogging/malfunctions; aid operator in correct machine performance; label and organize bins; gather crop by hand or machine; place crop in buckets/bags/bins; sort good product from contaminated or rotting product by hand or with machine; sort garlic bulbs at sorting tables located in the field to remove defective bulbs and debris; hand pick garlic from the ground and place harvested garlic in carts and/or harvest with machine; handle bulbs carefully to avoid bruising, cutting, puncturing or any other damage;
Special Requirements
Applicants must have 3 months experience with farm/irrigation work. To meet minimum acceptable performance standards when irrigating, the worker must, after a 10 day conditioning period, move an average of at least 48 40-foot sections of 3-inch pipe or 44 40-foot sections of 4-inch pipe per hour under normal working conditions.
