Job description
Agricultural Equipment Operator: prepare soil for planting, plant, transplant, cultivate, and mechanically harvest flue-cured tobacco, peanuts, soybeans, cotton, corn. Operate or tend equipment or machinery used in agricultural production, such as tractors, self-propelled combines, and irrigation equipment. Operate towed machines such as seed drills and sprayers to plant, fertilize, dust and spray crops. Observe and listen to machinery operation to detect problems. Troubleshoot, repair and perform minor maintenance on farm vehicles and equipment. May drive farm trucks and tow farm trailers to haul farm related materials, supplies, and harvested crops to designated locations as directed by the farm manager. Operate ginning equipment, including but not limited to bale hoisters, skid steer loaders, forklifts and cotton module feeders. Assist gin operator with repairing equipment, clearing blockages, cleaning lint filters, refilling supplies, sweeping floors, removing trash buildup, and picking up cotton on yard. Operate baling press. Load cotton module to feeders, feed wires on press, un-tarp modules, move bales from press to bale slab. Tie, tag and bag cotton and mote bales. Secure cotton with ties. Remove cotton samples for quality inspection. Use hoister to load cotton and mote bales onto vehicles for transport. Work is done for long periods of time. Though not a hiring requirement, if a worker drives a company vehicle during the period of employment then at the time of operating the company vehicle the driver must possess a valid drivers license issued by a U.S. state or foreign equivalent and operate the company vehicle in accordance with the license restrictions and vehicle classifications applicable to that license. Workers will walk along rows as specified by employer and remove weeds and grass from fields by hand or using a hoe. Workers will cultivate by hand or with mechanical cultivator attached to farm tractor. Worker may operate mechanical combine to harvest these crops. The use or possession or being under the influence of illegal drugs or alcohol during working time is prohibited. Workers may be requested to submit to random drug or alcohol tests at no cost to the worker. Failure to comply with the request or testing positive may result in immediate termination. All testing will occur post-hire and is not a part of the interview process. Negative result may be required post-hire and before commencing work. No smoking or tobacco use of any kind will be permitted in the gin, in company vehicles, or anywhere on company premises. Employer reserves the right to discharge any employee found smoking or in possession of smoking materials including cigarettes, cigars, snuff, chewing tobacco, pipe tobacco, electronic cigarettes or any other smoking paraphernalia. Must be able to lift 75 lbs. to shoulder height repetitively throughout the workday. Minimum 3 months verifiable work experience required operating 200 hp equipment including 6-row, self-propelled cotton harvester and GPS guided equipment. Basic literacy and mathematical ability required. Must commit to work entire contract period.
Workers may be required to perform work that is incidental to farming the crops listed in the application. All other duties, if any assigned, will be those duties of Farm Worker, Diversified Crops, DOT code 407.687-010 (SOC (ONET/OES) code 45-2092.02). This is a very demanding and competitive business in which quality specifications must be rigorously adhered to. Sloppy work cannot and will not be tolerated.
The worker understands that if he abandons his employment or is terminated for cause prior to the end of the anticipated period of employment, the worker will forfeit the guarantee and reimbursement of certain transportation costs. Excessive absences and/or tardiness cannot be tolerated and may result in termination.
