Job description
Plant, cultivate, harvest, wash, sort, grade, package and label fruit/veg crops. Harvest fruits and vegetables according to size, shape and degree of maturity. Place vegetables into field containers. Must be able to listen to, understand and follow simple instructions to ensure all work meets employer's quality standards and food safety standards. This job requires three months (or 480 hours) of verifiable experience.
The employer's farm is certified organic. The employer farms to promote the use of biological interactions and cultural practices in place of agricultural chemicals. If chemicals are used, the employer will comply with re-entry restrictions applicable to pesticides and other chemicals used in the field.
Field operation tasks will include, but are not limited to: seeding; transplanting; irrigation management, fertilizing, high tunnel production and maintenance; mulch laying and removal; field preparation and clean-up; trellising and pruning; row cover management; disease and pest scouting; organic spraying; record keeping; assist at farmer's market; general farm maintenance; tractor operations; and hand weeding.
In addition to field operation tasks, duties may include: Managing inventory of stored produce; manage customer order process and maintain fulfillment records; Assessment of crops for health and harvest (e.g. size, quality, quantity); Assist and provide input to employer regarding crop production, planning and employee performance. Monitor the completion of daily farm tasks. Track and report inventory of production supplies to the Employer. Assist at farmers market and fill farmers market customer order boxes and distribution.
Workers may not report for work while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The possession or use of illegal drugs or alcohol (exception is made for moderate alcohol consumption in company housing during non-working hours) on company property is prohibited and will be cause for termination. The employer, at no cost, will provide any tools or equipment necessary to perform required tasks to the worker.
Participate in the harvest and packing responsibilities by maintaining a neatly organized and clean harvest and storage environment and maintain harvest and distribution lists. Workers will assist with farm maintenance tasks like mowing and weed whacking. All work must be performed carefully according to instructions to avoid damage or harm to crops.
Crops may include but are not limited to the following:
Greens; beets, carrots and other root vegetables; cabbage; garlic; beans; peppers; potatoes; tomatoes; squash; cucumbers; watermelon and more.
Special Requirements
Workers must be able to work outdoors in all types of weather. Must be able to repeatedly lift and carry at least 50 pounds; crouch, squat and bend for long periods of time. A designated farm crew leader or supervisor will provide instructions and general supervision. Technical horticultural activities will be closely supervised; however, workers will be expected to perform their general duties as quickly and efficiently as possible without close supervision.
At least one worker with the ability to read, write, understand and speak English and Spanish is preferred.
